More “I read the news today, oh boy”

I hate to sound like this but I just love this crap.and so….

Exercise Prevents Colds??!!?

Uh…oh really? Are they actually saying that exercise promotes good health?

Isn’t that odd?

And I wonder how much money was spent in finding this amazing revelation out.

Autism Linked to TelevisionStandby…rant coming…

Well, perhaps the ##@@!! television should be thrown out the @@##!! window and parents should start acting like parents and perhaps spend some time with their kids instead of trying to get them “out of their hair”. Oh…but wait now…you can’t! Society these days won’t let you take proper care of your little ones anymore. God forbid(!) you should ever discipline them else they should be scarred for life. Oh horrors! What kind of idyllic life would I be leading right now if my parents had never instilled in my young, thick skull, a damn good sense of right and wrong. I most certainly would be “less scarred I’m sure (yeah right!). Thank god and little green apples idiotic ideas like” time out” didn’t exist back then.Good parenting: Never accepted now-a-days. It’s a “time -out” style world now (absolutely useless), so go right ahead…plunk them down in front of the electronic babysitter and let their brains turn to mush.

As “The Cable Guy” said just before he fell off the tower onto the huge satellite receiver dish; “Someone’s gotta kill the babysitter (TV)”.

Heavy on sarcasm here and no offense to all the righteous parents out there bucking the system and trying to be good parents in a society that basically is configured not to allow you to do so. Hit a nerve that’s all.

Rant over.

Iran steps up enrichment work

“Iran denies it has a nuclear weapons programme, maintaining that the project is aimed solely at producing electricity.”

Uh, huh. I believe them. Just about as much as I believe…

N. Korea stating it will not pursue any more nuclear weapons testing…(This is not the article I wanted but it will just have to do).no more than I believe the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister’s say so.Now maybe this sounds kinda’ harsh but I was deeply involved in the Cold War like everyone else wasn’t. My time in the Cold War US Naval Submarine force is as fresh as it was when I left 18 years ago and while I have absolutely nothing against the Russian people (not even back then), the government on the other was/is a whole other story. With all due respect to Vladimir Putin (and he deserves it)…governments simply do not change that fast especially a government that was as hard core and corrupt as the old Soviet Union’s. These guys haven’t just disappeared you know.

Bottom line here: There are two main, readily available sources of nuclear technology, info and devices in this world and that’s Russia and us and we ain’t helping them.

Perhaps this may seem to be a somewhat narrow minded outlook but when you’ve been involved in this kind of stuff in such an “up close and personal” manner, well…maybe it isn’t so narrow minded after all.

Ah well…we shall see won’t we.

Still here…

Just to let you know I’m still around but being back to work after 2 months worth of convalescence after surgery I’m finding that all that time I had while laying around the house is now gone along with all that extra time to post.

That’s okay…the paychecks will be a welcome thing indeed. One cannot live on blogs alone or something like that.

So please stand by while I get used to working again after 2 months off and a reshaped belly (good lord, I have to buy new work pants now!) and stop falling into a chair as soon as I get home. It’s amazing how much you can weaken after only 2 months with little or no physical activity. Ah well, I’m not that old yet. I still have a bit of bounce back in me still. Give me another week or two and I’ll be just fine (sound of person exploding).

A long Meadow Farms post: New Quilt size

A new size of quilt has come about due to an order from a lady who has two twin beds at home that she thought might look good with a couple of my lady’s quilts on them.

The “TwinFull” quilts! The Two "TwinFulls"

Now such a thing isn’t exactly as simple as one might think it is. As I understand it, when a customer places a custom order it’s not like saying “I  want two twin size quilts done in blue’s and gray’s and when will they be finished?”.  Oh no, not that simple at all. First thing that occurs is that the customer must obtain the measurements (length and width) of the bed including(!) the desired drop on either side of the bed added to the width and the “tuck and fold” where the quilt is tucked under the pillow an inch or two and then brought over the top for the finishing touch. These little items add inches and the inches add up. This is what makes the difference when one visits someone who has a hand made quilt custom made to their specifications spread over the bed in the guest room and seeing a the same bed with one of those “comforters in a bag” one can obtain at Walmart for example.

Yes, my lady makes quilts in (her) standard sizes of twin, full, queen and king but her standard sizes  have greater length and width than the industry standard sizes. This is for the very reason stated above and from her years of experience of satisfying her customers and never having a complaint. Having a customer measure their bed for a custom order is to assure a “perfect” fit according to her customers taste. Sometimes a custom quilt in a “standard” size quilt is alright and sometimes the measurements are needed. How my wife judges these things is beyond me but then again…I’m not the quilter here (I built the counter).

Now if you look close at the picture; in the background you’ll see a large poster. This poster was made by the people at NCIC , a company that, among many other things,  provides folks around here who have the mind to start or expand a small business with “micro loans”. To wit:

NCIC was established in 1975 to promote sound development in Northeastern Vermont and Northern New Hampshire.

We are a private, non-profit, community based corporation. NCIC’s goals are to generate and preserve employment and other social and economic benefits for the region by prudent investment of its own resources.

NCIC provides capital and professional assistance for a wide range of business and community development ventures and investments.

Long Meadow Farms NCIC poster Anyway, the point of all this is that Long Meadow Farms Quilts was one of the featured businesses at the NCIC annual business meeting /trade show at the Mountain View Grand Hotel in Whitefield, NH and for each business display, a 24″ X 36″ poster was created by the folks at NCIC and when the show was over, they brought Laurie the poster they made for her quilt shop which now hangs proudly in her workshop behind the quilting table.

And by the way…the frame of images were made from actual pictures of the quilts she has made over the years.

Now you may ask if I have any conscience about shamelessly plugging my lady’s business and the answer you will receive is an unqualified NO! I know quality work when I see it and that’s what she does…quality work. There is no shame in promoting that which seems to be slowly disappearing in the “Made In America” end of things. In this age of “throw away” items it’s nice to see people like my wife and the other business owners up here in the north country (and all of Vermont for that matter) still producing quality products that are meant to last.

IE 7.0 final sneaked out

The IE 7.0 team at Microsoft put the final version of IE 7.0 on the streets before most people realized it (the sneaks). Announced earlier that the final would be available via MS’s Automatic Updates, a “sneak up behind you and tap you on the shoulder” early release was offered as a download from MS’s IE Webpage only a few days ago. Does anyone think that the soon to be released Firefox 2 final had anything to do with this?

Nah…why would anyone think that?

I’ve been using and testing IE 7.0 since the first preview version was released in February 2006 and rather than write up yet another review of the browser I’ll just link you to Paul Thurrot’s write up on the final and yes, it’s well worth the release despite it’s funky UI layout, a problem that MS’s IE 7.0 team states will be addressed for a later release. Personally, after three days or so of using the new layout, I easily adjusted to it much like a person who has their home remodeled while away on vacation has to get used to their home’s new layout. The increased functional capability and the increased security benefits outweigh the strange terrain of the new browser itself.

One thing about the new browser for anyone wanting to update to IE 7.0:

You have to be running XP Home or PRO SP2 and the OS absolutely has to be fully updated(!) including the infamous “Windows Genuine Advantage” tool otherwise it’s a no go.

For myself, I have nothing to hide from Microsoft or anyone else for that matter and I couldn’t care less if the WGA “phones home” occasionally. Microsoft, like any other large (huge) software company has better things to do than sift through the stripped down data (that WGA sends) of millions of users looking for some juicy tidbit that doesn’t exist in the first place and I’ve never been sorry I’ve kept my OS fully updated. The XP Pro that I use is definately a better OS than when it was first loaded on this machine when it was new so it’s user’s choice and using IE 6.0 as your main browser these days is assuredly asking for trouble even with a good firewall and anti-virus program.

Bottom line: If ya’ ain’t got it…get it. If your one of those who absolutely will not let MS touch your computer, at least consider using Firefox (wait a few days for version 2.0 though) or one of the IE based browsers such as Avant or Maxthon, all of which gives you enhanced security options not available in IE 6.0, tabs and Ad-blocking (which even IE 7.0 does not have).

Back again and oh the weather!

Made it back in one piece ok but coming over Sheffield heights (the mountain between St. Johnsbury and Barton, VT) was akin to driving in a shallow, fast moving river, the rain was coming down so hard. The peak of Sheffield Heights is the highest elevation of Interstate 91 at 1856 ft so you’re a bit into the clouds when a storm comes in. They say that when it’s 80 degrees in  the St. Johnsbury valley it can be 35 degrees and snowing on the top of the heights. This is slightly far fetched as you might guess but not that far off from the truth. On the plus side, I have years of being on the road and an old but trusty Jeep Cherokee under my rather skinny bottom that is about as sure footed as any vehicle I’ve ever driven. I plan on keeping it until the body rusts off and I’m driving nothing but a frame.

Now to add fuel to fire as far as tonight’s storm is concerned, looking out the back door it appears that the heavy rain has just turned into big, wet heavy flakes of snow(!) and there is a severe winter weather advisory out for wet, heavy snow through midnight which means snapping tree limbs (most trees still have a good head of leaves on them) and falling power lines.

Yippee-Kay-Yay-Kow-Patty, I just can’t wait. At least it’s not in the dead of winter and zero degrees out as well then the house gets real, cold real fast. Ah, well…such is life in the merry mountains of the Northeast Kingdom. You never quite know what to expect.

Morning all

Just a quick entry to let everyone know I’m still here. After my first full week at work, I’ve been completely wiped right out when I get home and I couldn’t crank up enough brain power to write anything. So it goes as they say.

I’m heading down country today to the White River Jct VA for a semi-annual and to drop some transfers from work off at the main store. Quite a guy I am, doing work stuff on my day-off yes I am you betcha’. The area has a severe flood watch out until Saturday morning as well so it might make the 2 hour (one way) trip fairly interesting. Think I’ll bring my camera along.

Not much time for anything else since I want to catch the news before I head out. Eating would be a good thing too since I’m one of those slim type folks that burn up any fodder within an hour and a half and pass out 45 minutes later for lack of sustenance. Well, maybe not that bad but I tend to get a bad headache and somewhat woozy if I don’t keep the furnace well stoked so off to the kitchen I go yo-ho.

Later all…

An Autumn Sunday

Union Street 1So here we are on October 15th 2006 on a Sunday afternoon and any further denial that the cold weather is indeed on it’s way is a futile endeavor. As you can see from the shot that I took today, it’s definitely looking "past peak" as far as autumn colors are concerned and you can probably feel the chill in the air just by looking at the picture. Oh well, the holiday season is about to begin and that’s always a cheery thought with visits from friends and family and such. Something I’ve begun to look forward to again. I lost the magic there for awhile but it seems to be slowly returning again.

Anyway…

My lady and I cleaned up the last of the "back forty" section of the yard of all the leftovers from putting up the new tarp style "tent" shed that she ordered. I really haven’t had much to do with most of the actual "up-putting" of the thing due to my convalescence but I did manage to get out there Friday evening and help finish it up and load a couple things into it that will free up some badly needed garage space and the shed is bigger than we thought…this is good!
We had to take turns using the (2 car) garage last year due to our friend’s (who is also our landlord) stuff in the other side. He removed his belongings this summer which just left ours and so more storage space was needed hence the tent shed. Works well.

So on that note, I get to park my rig in the garage this winter (Yeah!!) so no more getting out there in the freezing cold and scrapping all the snow and ice off my old Jeep Cherokee at 6:30 in the morning and wondering if the battery has enough juice left in it to start the darn thing after the Polar Express came howling through the night before. Parking in the garage will be a nice thing indeed, yes it will. Now I’m waiting for a couple of paychecks to come in so I can buy badly needed things like new wipers for the Jeep that it’s been needing for the past year (ok, so I’m slow on these things). Might help some.

And yes, I’m back at work finally and my back is definitely feeling it after sitting around for the better part of six weeks but it’s better than what came before. Have yet to see a paycheck but that will be coming next week a paycheck will be very welcome even though it’s only for half my regular hours. Right now, I’m not going to be picky you know what i mean?

I’m hoping this winter turns out to be fairly productive as things tend to slow down some this time of year. Long Meadow Farms Quilt shop has been feeling it. We’re right in between the "Leaf Peepers" and the ski season so sales have been dragging but it was to be expected. Still, it doesn’t make you very happy about things. The Fall colors seem to have come and gone extremely quickly up in these parts so most of the "Leaf Peepers" stayed more to the south of us but who can control the weather? Things will work out, they always do.

Oh, and speaking of Long Meadow Farms…her web site is back up but our local web host has still failed to enable FrontPage extensions on their web server so Laurie still is unable to update her site on a regular basis. If this continues to be the case then we will move the site to another web host. We’re still looking around for likely candidates. The craft sites that she actually sells her quilts (and other offerings) out of she has been updating usually on a nightly basis so no problem there. Fortunes of business and all that.
