This sure ain’t WordPress.com!

Boy I tell ya’. Hosting your own is a far cry from doing it the WordPress.com way. Such control and so many things to learn. Having all this control doesn’t do you much good when you don’t know how to use it.

What Plugin? What widget? What do I want? Why do I want it? What do they want? Where’s the asprin?

What do I need to do to optimize the thing? Heck I didn’t even know you could do that.

Site map…Meta descriptions…Meta headers…plugin this…widget that…where do I put these three lines of code anyway? Do you like green eggs and ham?

Good grief it’s enough to drive a guy nuts especially when he doesn’t have the clarity of a younger brain anymore. Ok, I’m not particularly old and musty yet, just more like near fifty than near forty but I’ve found that I’m just not that intuitive about things anymore. But I am more patient I have to give you that and I’ve needed it.

Still, when a blogger lets go of the mother host (shall we say) which in this case was WordPress.com, you cast yourself adrift amongst all the other sites that exist on the web (a bit more than a ton and a half of ‘em) and you find that it’s up to you to do everything yourself including getting some attention paid to your blog and all the work you put into it. Most free hosting services take care of the basic search engine submissions for you but once you “host your own” you have to do that yourself as well which includes all the research and asking (the right) questions in the right places. There’s a bunch of ways to “optimize” your blog and I’ve found and implemented a few so far but don’t ask me to do it again. I’m not sure what I’ve done yet.

More to come though. I’ve had to spend more time setting up and adjusting and correcting mistakes than posting but the construction end of things should slow down here shortly and the posting of my usual varied drivel will pick back up again.

I can’t wait.

At Ease Disease or Tis The Season To Be Sickly…

Ah yes. The wonderful season of sneezing, coughing wheezing and general miserableness is upon us. Where heads feel like over inflated footballs and about the same shape as well. Stuffed noses, bulging eyeballs, low grade fevers, chills and all the other aches and pains that come with the changing of the seasons for those living in the northern territories where the phrase “change of seasons” means a great deal more than breaking out the light jackets.

Of course up in these parts it appears that old man winter is still at his summer place and is very reluctant to move from his beach side hammock and whatever warm ocean breeze that may be currently wafting over him to travel all the way up to the kingdom just to make things cold and nasty for us. It’s been in the 50′s during the day around these parts and barely touching the 30′s at night for most of the time and a friend of mine who resides in Michigan was just remarking in an email (complaining?) that it was 62 degrees there which is, according to the source, unheard of.

I believe her.

Either way, all these mediocre temperatures and rainy weather make for a heavy case of the sniffles and worse. I swear, my wife and I have had headaches for the last week or so and the bones are reminding us that we are most definitely NOT in our twenties anymore or even our late 30′s for that matter.

Aaaarrrggghhh!!! (cough-spew-sneeze-hack-ow!). It’s those pesky aliens I tell you…aliens for sure!

Sure am glad I got that flu shot “by jeezum” (said with strong Vermont accent), otherwise I bet I would feel a whole lot worse than this…yuk-yuk-yuk.

Well, anyway…life goes on even if it’s with a box of Kleenex permanently attached to my face. Makes for no end of remarks at work.

Hope everyone is better than we are. Have a peaceful, sneeze free night all.

Taking a breather

Just taking a breather after our “second” Thanksgiving.

Family, another dinner (mmmm!), staying up late and a new cat (makes three all told) are enough to make you a little bushed so regular posting will continue this week as I know “all” my “avid readers” are just waiting for updates from the Northeast Kingdom.

The blog is about as setup as it’s going top get until I learn my way around plugins, widgets, CSS and all the other stuff that’s involved and that’s just fine with me. I’ve spent too long already mucking about with the above and not enough with generating content but that’s what learning is all about right?

Meanwhile, it’s back to work tomorrow so…

G’night allzzzzzzzzzzzz

A few things are broken.

I had some free time this morning betwixt and between chores so I looked around the new blog to see what posts might be broken, how the search module worked, Navigation links etc and during this grand adventure I found that a few posts were missing and links in some other posts were turning up 404 pages.

Hmmm, I said (among other things).

It seems that when I did away with my old tech blog and transferred all those posts over to Just Thinkin’ when it was hosted on WordPress.com I forgot a few which explained the broken links and why the search module couldn’t find what I wanted. Ah well, such is life.

Maybe someday, when I get a whole lot of time I start plugging these holes but there really is no hurry since the holes are few and far between and I have a lot to learn yet just about WordPress itself.

So please forgive the few anomalies while I live and learn here. Otherwise, I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving.

A bit of navigation

Just a quick note hear to let everyone know that after much spelunking about the world of plugins, I finally found and installed a plugin that gives me “Previous” and “Next” links of sorts at the bottom of each page. Looks something like what you’d see when a search in Google turned up more than one page.

Anyway, at least now there’s a way to get to get around the blog properly until version 1.2 of the theme is available.

Night all.

Ok, I’m done.

You can?t learn if you don?t mess things up. That way you have to find out how to put things back together.

Can?t wait for the next update to the theme so I can get my
?Previous? and ?Next? links back (that?s what started the whole thing
in the first place). I?m currently just too new to code to hack it
myself.

If anyone notices anything missing please let me know.

Have a good holiday!
