Mucking about with the blog
Jan 13th, 2007 by Kirk M
Just a post to let you know what I’ve been doing to my Wordpress install as of late. Just to say I did and all that.
I’ve been working under the hood so to speak mainly learning how to work with the UTW tagging system as to what I wanted as an end result and what I don’t want etc. The first thing I decided was that I did not want my categories used as tags. Doing this really kludged up my related posts portion of things, mixing way too many not-so-related posts amongst the actual related ones. And of course not all approximately 150+ previous posts are re-tagged yet and I’m actually still working on organizing, adding and weeding out the existing tags as I go so it’s going to be a rather long process.
That’s okay. It’s not like my livelihood depends on a small blog called Just Thinkin’ or anything like that. I have plenty of time.
I was nosing around my wife’s Bed Quilts to Bookmarks blog when I happened to hover over one of her links and suddenly a thumbnail popped up showing a preview of the linked site.
Hmmm, I thought. This is new. And then I remembered seeing an announcement of something called Snap during one of the times I had logged into my old blog’s admin panel over at Wordpress.com to check Akismet. This was awhile back and I had forgotten about it. I asked Laurie what she thought about the new addition to her blog. She has a basic hatred for all things Flash and Pop-upish and I can’t blame her in the least so it made my eyebrows waggle a bit when she told me that she approved of the Snap function. Better than link titles that’s for sure. I also found it pretty smart myself.
So I hunted down the plugin version of Snap, found it and uploaded it to the blog. Did a small amount of configuring and it seems to work just fine and dandy. I have to agree–it’s better than link titles in showing your readers where a link may lead to. I’d definitely appreciate any feedback as to what you may think.
Update: Snap stopped working on both of our blogs sometime this morning. Then somewhere around 11:15 am (EST) it began working again. The “Snap” website was up but the pop-ups never popped up. Only the normal link titles showed. Who knows? The good thing is that the loss of service didn’t break the blog at all. It just reverted back to normal operation and all that.
I’ll keep an eye on it.

Yeah, I’ve decided to keep snap on my blog for now. I’m getting quite used to it.
There are a few things that I want to change for my blog, for example using images for my most use categories, Change a few categories (which will involve going through pretty much all my 150 posts), create new pages and subpages for reviews and so on.
One day I will actually go and do it.
I know what you’re saying.
Of course, just as I’ve made the decision to stop mucking about so much, those rotten people at Wordpress.org will be releasing Wordpress 2.1 by the end of this month and I’ll just have to upgrade now won’t I?
