Taming the Warrior

Alrighty then. After much configuring, adding of tags, screwing things up, deactivating plugins, restoring databases and other such learning curve type nonsense (cursing included), I do believe that I’ve got a wee bit of handle on this tiger of plugin.

What I have managed to accomplish so far:

  • I have learned new ways to curse constructively.
  • I have learned how to restore my screwed up Wordpress database so go ahead…bring on Wordpress 2.1–I’m ready!
  • I have learned how to weed out my Wordpress database of crap leftover from deleted plugins like FireStats for instance.
  • Learned which plugin was (I think) arguing with UTW like the “Head Meta Description” plugin and getting rid of it.
  • Which UTW options I should use and which UTW options are already taken care of by my theme templates. LetoPrime 0.9.6 is already setup for use by the latest version of UTW so certain UTW options didn’t need to be used.
  • Applied tags to a few of my posts. I would have done more but after tagging the third post on the main page, everything went to bold type in all the content below the last tagged post and the sidebar as well. Every other page was okay except for the main one hence restoring the database and finally finding and deleting the conflicting plugin.
  • And finally setting up a tag cloud page.

Phew! That’s enough for now that’s for sure. Like I stated above, the learning and proper applying of tags and general use of this Ultimate Tag Warrior beast of a plugin has hardly begun and if and when I get a good handle on the thing I’ll take time to work up a post on what I learned so you will hopefully avoid all the mistakes I’m currently making and that I’m positive I will be making in the future but it won’t be for awhile yet as I’ still in the learning process. The experience might especially be helpful for bloggers like me who hadn’t really gotten to know their WordPress install as well as they should and have absolutely no coding ability in the least. Once you learn how to handle this Warrior and you’ll at least know your WordPress install real good when your done.

Until then, (like always when I’m trying my best to screw things up by learning something new) bear with me please and feel free to raze me in the comments whenever you see my blog go funky.Tongue out

UTW is definately one of my must-have plugins. I can’t imagine running my site without it. (Which is why I added it to my LetoPrime code.)

(Oh, your links in the header are malformed; looks like an “/” at the end of the link. You may want to check that out.)

  2. KirkM says:

I found the problem with the header links and deleted the “/”. thanks for the tip David…appreciate it much.

When it’s time to tag your existing posts, I’ve heard good things about this plugin: http://fly.ingsparks.de/2006-09-20/retag-post-extension-for-utw/

Oh! And if there’s anything that would have made it less terrifying to install UTW, you should let me know (:

Christine, one thing I would appreciate is a list of all the UTW extensions you know about. :)

  5. Kirk M says:

    Hi Christine,

Welcome to Just Thinkin and all that. I’m sure it wouldn’t have been so “terrifying” (did I say that? Eeeg!) if I wasn’t so new to using a Wordpress install. I believe that’s the thing right there. Before I installed the plugin I searched around for basically an “UTW…A guide for the complete idiot” type of thing. I found that the plugin appears to be quite theme dependent also and David’s LetoPrime is made for UTW. I also don’t have the benefit of having a sharp *young* 20-something year old mind…or a 30-something year old mind for that matter :P

    Andy: welcome also.

I’ve come across more of your comments while spelunking around for SEO info and banging around Performancing. And I agree…a list would be nice. We don’t want much from Christine now do we?

Sheesh, Christine and Andy (and hello Rhea and the rest) on one blog post. Who needs page rank when you have comments like these? :D

This is too much work to do. This way not for everyone, much easier to host your blog on blogspot.com or other same service like I do.

  7. KirkM says:

    Hey William,

You’re right. this is definitely not for everyone. But for those of us that just gotta control everything(!!)…it’s perfect…well almost…okay, not quite that perfect…maybe a bit annoying at times actually…

It has improved since this post though but since you’ve have archives back to 2005…more power to ya’! :)
