A Proper Tea Kettle

We had a tea kettle. A small one. It sat on the stove and faithfully boiled up water for us (and for her for quite a few years before she met me) and then one day, like all tea kettles, it sprung a leak and had to be replaced.

There was one thing about this particular little kettle though—it didn’t make any noise while it was getting up to steam.

And I just wasn’t use to that.

Sure, when the little boiler did get it’s steam up, it whistled and screamed most satisfactorily, but it didn’t make all the creaking, popping and groaning while it was getting there from a dead cold start. The kind of noises that I was used to hearing from most tea kettles. Over the years of my life I found I could easily judge what the kettle was doing by those “I’m heating up” noises and most times could get out to the kitchen before it blew it’s whistle at me.

So now we have what you might call a “standard size”, stainless steel tea kettle that sits on the stove and when it’s filled in the morning and the flame is applied, it creaks, pops and groans in a most proper manner and every thing’s right again. My honey probably can’t understand why I feel this way. Like most intelligent, common sense type women (I wouldn’t have her any other way), she has a more practical nature than I do; “It boils water—so it works. You need more?”

And yes, I can certainly understand this. However, a man tends to have a need to “feel at home” and for me that requires having my wonderful lady by my side with all her marvelous stuff, our three cats, an aquarium full of overgrown fish, a house full of plants and a tea kettle that creaks, pops and groans, telling me that it’s doing it’s job in a proper manner.

Ah yes, sounds like it’s just about ready now. Have to have that morning coffee ya’ know.

Have a good day all.

Can’t Seem To Get Going

It seems that I haven’t been able to just get myself going today. Almost got outside this morning to warm up the rig when everything just caved in on me and it’s been like that all day. I know what the problem is unfortunately I can’t do a thing about it myself…it’s up to the VA to see what can be done and I just hate depending on someone else to fix a health problem. Sometimes I have to though as much as it irks me to do so. The biggest quandary here is that it’s kept me out of work and I have projects to accomplish and they do not get done themselves.

Just blowing off here.

As you can see I’ve finally gotten rid of the gray background that lived under the sidebar. I’ve been searching for that in the theme files for days now. My lack of coding knowledge slowed me down but I found a “repeat y” command that came after a url path line for pageback.gif (just a long narrow border looking thing aligned to the right) which turned out to be the line of code I’d been looking for.

Gone!

I’ve been working towards a cleaner looking theme than the original while keeping all the excellent built in functions of LetoPrime intact.

Let me know if you see any anomalies.

Beware of changes–learning some stuff

Sometimes you just have to mess around with things in order to learn the whys and wherefore’s of how something operates. Today is messing with themes and the changing thereof so be prepared for some weird stuff for awhile. Things will settle down here before the night ends.

Unfortunately, I only have this blog to learn on. Maybe someday I’ll buy up another domain name just to do my testing on but for now…there might be some strange things happening.

Heck, what else am I supposed to do when a disability acts up and keeps me home from work. Can’t lay in bed all day.

Server Problems-> Akismet

Here’s the probable answer to the Akismet problems we’ve been experiencing–server problems. Once they get moved over to the new servers, I’ll be able to use both Spam Karma 2 and Akismet 2.0 plugins to stop these miserable spammers and get back to what I do best with this blog. Rambling around. :P

Good work guys. I always like a team that can fess up to problems. Always refreshing.

Cluster Upgrade

Because of network issues in our Phoenix cluster we’ve had to shut it down, and over the past week there have been some blips of downtime where you probably got some spam through on your blog.

Because spammers never sleep, every second of uptime is really important to us, and we’re bringing online a new cluster of Akismet servers in San Antonio as soon as possible, in addition to building out our presence in Dallas.

I’ll update this post when the new servers are online, in the meantime if any spam got through don’t forget to use the “recheck queue” button new in the 2.0 version of the plugin to easily clear it out.

Traded Aksimet for Spam Karma 2

So my faithful spam eating Akismet plugin has apparently lost it’s mind and is voraciously eating all the suspected spam comments posted to my blog and no longer holding them in it’s queue for myself to moderate. After all, a few of these past-captured suspects were actual valid comments. Not many but even one valid comment means I want to deal with all these possible “spamments” before they get sent to the “Great Spam Void” (whatever). However, it appears that I’m not the only one whose having problems with immediately disappearing Aksimet spam comments and I had the same problem when I rolled back to the previous version (from 2.0 to 1.8.1) and since it’s a service external to my blog, I have to suspect that the problem is with the service and not a local WP install or plugin problem.

And so, sadly enough, I’ve had to deactivate Akismet until a solution is announced (The Akismet crew does have a habit of fessing up to any problems it might encounter with it’s service) and have installed Dr. Dave’s Spam Karma 2 in it’s place. One thing I noticed immediately when I checked it’s setup pages (yes, I said pages), was that where Akismet basically has no options to set at all (just one), Spam Karma 2 has multi pages of set-up options. If I ever wished for exact control, I’ve got it now.

I left everything set to default and, like Aksimet, I can moderate captured suspected spam but this is one powerful beast so if your valid comment didn’t get through or you find something funky going on (besides answering more math questions if your comment is under suspicion), please let me know via the contact form.

If Akismet can solve it’s problem and pretty much guarantee it won’t happen again, then I’ll turn it back on. I hear that the combination of both plugins is mighty powerful protection indeed.

Did you ever want to “Penquin Slap” somebody?

Penquin SlapDid you ever just want to back slap somebody? Just have the ultimate desire to slap the sense into someone when they’re being numb as a rock? For instance when you find yourself explaining over and over and over again why this, that or the other thing would be a much better way to acheive our goals etc, etc, but the person your talking to just refuses to get it? There has been so many times that I’ve wanted to do just this as these boneheads walked by me.

Well, my lady came across this image of just the right example of what I’m talking about here. The Penquin Slap. I had this gif for awhile and had forgotten all about it until I came across these two little guys while I was doing some weekly maintenance to the old machine I call a PC and I just had to show them off. :P

Weather in Punxsutawney, PA-An Early Spring?

ground-hog1

Please see the new Punxsutawney Phil 2008 update here.

The weather forecast for Punxsutawney, PA (that ain’t easy to spell I’ll tell you that) is calling for an overcast sky and 80% to 90% chance of snow (depending which weather site you bang into).

To wit:

Cloudy with snow showers becoming a steady accumulating snow later on. High 28F. Winds SSW at 10 to 15 mph. Chance of snow 80%. 1 to 2 inches of snow expected.

So what does this mean for us? Well it’s Groundhog Day isn’t it? And that weather forecast means that ol’ Punxsutawney Phil won’t be seeing his shadow this year and that of course means an early Spring which is something I won’t be complaining about and neither will our aching bones.

Seems like every February the 2nd these last few years, Phil has seen his shadow and jumped right back into bed for another six weeks and that’s exactly what I wanted to do also. I seem to appreciate the cold, wet weather a lot less these day–go figure.

And with that positive type thought of warm, wonderful weather in mind, I shall henceforth get ready for work and hope ol’ Phil decides to make an early start of it this year.

The Cats are “Mooned”

Anybody who states that the moon doesn’t doesn’t have any effect on us biologicals never had cats. Tis the full moon and our three idiots cats are absolutely bonkers–as usual.

Wide eye’d, claws out, stuck to the ceiling, climbing the walls nuts! Now some would say that’s kind of usual for a cat but I would have to respond that they had never owned a cat or if they did it was in a very large house and had a maid or butler take care of it. Sure, when you have three male cats in one regular sized household things can get a bit boisterous at times but when the full moon rolls around so do these pint size felines with all sorts of fur munching, three-way wrestling matches and banging heads onto walls.

Amazing feats of agility are also performed such as the old climbing the air routine, landing on anything but their feet and bounding from her bureau to mine and on to our respective stomachs (all three of wild wonder cats at the same time) and doing the feline version of World Wrestling Federation across our faces. All this at three AM results in some rather rude awakenings and flung about felines.

Don’t get me wrong here, we love our fur bearing, four legged, Tender Vittles eating, house type cats very much indeed. Our never ending source of entertainment and “I don’t care if your sleeping, pet me anyway!” feline friends. We just keep our squirt guns near to hand for the quick draw if we need them…especially during the full moon.
