Ahhh, The First Spring Morning

It’s sunny, it’s bright and it’s Spring. It’s also 2 degrees above zero and there’s still a ton of snow on the ground but it’s still Spring. The clincher to the whole thing is that by tomorrow temps should be up in the fifty’s and that’s just fine by me.

Our official egg standing ceremony got three eggs standing on their little bottoms while the other 2 eggs that we had apparently were a bit to bumpy to cooperate although my honey showed us all up and got all five of them standing at attention around 9:30 last night.

Observe:

And then the great show up:

It was probably a good thing we only had five eggs in the house or we might have had a couple of dozen of the the things standing all over the kitchen.

Now isn’t Spring just wonderful though what with the coming of warm temperatures, birds, grass, leaves, picnics and eggertainment as well.

It’s Egg Standing Time!

Egg standing druing Vernal EquinoxIt’s officially Spring folks and with the coming of Spring comes the Vernal equinox and the time of the Standing Of The Egg.

If you didn’t know about this little miracle that comes but once a year (at 8:07 pm EDT this year–see quote below), for a small period of time (I don’t remember exactly how long but long enough), you can stand a raw egg on it’s wide end and if you can be patient about the whole exercise it will stand there there like a…well…little egg soldier I guess.

One year my wife had five of the little breakfast buddies standing all in a group like they were all attending some sort of pre-chicken indoctrination or something. Last year it was only two since the others we tried had too many bumps on their respective bottoms. Quality control must have been down that month. Either way, here’s the picture we took just to prove it can be done and no—we didn’t dab glue on there behinds or hard boil them first.

March (3/20/06, 3/21/07, 3/20/08, 3/20/09, 3/20/10, 3/20/11, 3/20/12, 3/20/13, 3/20/14, 3/20/15, 3/20/16, 3/20/17, 3/20/18, 3/20/19, 3/20/20)

Far from being an arbitrary indicator of the changing seasons, March 20 (March 21 in some years) is significant for astronomical reasons. On March 20, 2007, at precisely 8:07 P.M. EDT (March 21, 00:07 Universal Time), the Sun will cross directly over the Earth’s equator. This moment is known as the vernal equinox in the Northern Hemisphere.

So give it a try folks and see how many you can stand at once and don’t forget the pictures. You’d be surprised how many people won’t believe it.

Thanks to my honey for reminding me and Elaine over at Elaine’s Place for the exact time and the quote I stole. :P

One Tough Marine

Another one from the mail bag.

With many years of service in my background I can assure you that this kind of person is very real indeed although who this person is may surprise you.

No peeking ahead now.

A LETTER FROM A FARM KID

The following letter, written by a ‘farm kid’ who had joined the U. S. Marine Corps, is now on display at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, CA.

Dear Ma and Pa:

I am well. Hope you are. Tell Brother Walt and Brother Elmer the Marine Corps beats working for old man Minch by a mile. Tell them to join up quick before maybe all of the places are filled. I was restless at first because you got to stay in bed till nearly 6 a.m., but am getting so I like to sleep late. Tell Walt and Elmer all you do before breakfast is smooth your cot and shine some things. No hogs to slop, feed to pitch, mash to mix, wood to split, fire today. Practically nothing.

Men got to shave but it is not so bad, there’s warm water. Breakfast is strong on trimmings like fruit juice, cereal, eggs, bacon, etc., but kind of weak on chops, potatoes, ham, steak, fried eggplant, pie and other regular food, but tell Walt and Elmer you can always sit by the two city boys that live on coffee. Their food plus yours holds you till noon when you get fed again. It’s no wonder these city boys can’t walk much. We go on “route marches”, which the platoon sergeant says are long walks to harden us. If he thinks so, it’s not my place to tell him different. A “route march” is about as far as to our mailbox at home. Then the city guys get sore feet and we all ride back in trucks. The country is nice but awful flat.

The sergeant is like a school teacher. He nags a lot. The Capt. is like the school board. Majors and colonels just ride around and frown. They don’t bother you none. This next will kill Walt and Elmer with laughing. I keep getting medals for shooting. I don’t know why. The bulls-eye is near as big as a chipmunk head and don’t move, and it ain’t shooting at you like the Higgett boys at home. All you got to do is lie there all comfortable and hit it. You don’t even load your own cartridges. They come in boxes.

Then we have what they call hand-to hand combat training. You get to wrestle with them city boys. I have to be real careful though, they break real easy. It ain’t like fighting with that ole bull at home.

I’m about the best they got in this except for that Tug Jordan from over in Silver Lake. I only beat him once. He joined up the same time as me, but I’m only 5’6″ and 130 pounds, and he’s 6’8″ and weighs near 300 pounds dry. Be sure to tell Walt and Elmer to hurry and join before other fellers get onto this setup and come stampeding in.

Your loving daughter,

Gail

I wonder if she’s made Staff Sargent yet.

Alright…Update was almost complete

So why were my FeedBurner site stats showing zero this morning? And why were all the keywords missing in my Whois description? Did I perhaps miss something here?

Yup!

I had missed throwing my meta keywords hack back into the header and installing the tracking script into my posts templates for the FeedBurner site stats. Quickly fixed of course but a bit aggravating as well.

So here’s a tip for all you newbie WP self-installed type bloggers out there. Your theme, when you get around to hacking the code of your install to your liking, will most likely contain most of the modifications you make including almost all of the plugin hacks with the exception of Admin stuff. So when you find out that your theme has been updated and all sorts of fixes and new features have been added and you just have to have it…Make sure you keep your old theme handy for reference and it’s a good idea to keep a text document on your Desktop where you can jot down all the changes you make as you go along which includes all the code you cut out and the new code you pasted in etc. It’s easy to do and it will save you a whole lot of frustration in the long run.

But always remember…you’ll still probably miss something and back-up, back-up, backup.

And have a great day.

Updating complete

My, that was easier than expected. I finished up everything including installing all the theme hacks and purging a couple of database tables that were gathering statistics over a half hour ago. The new update to my theme, Misty Look 3.2, seems to be better behaved then the previous version and I appreciate the small touches like spaces between sections of text in the sidebar where the last version everything was spaced evenly which made it hard to find where one link left off and another began.

One of the databases I purged was the one that gathered the visitor stats for the Top Ten page and the visitor counts at the top of single posts. Unfortunately, both are controlled by a single plugin so both are starting at ground zero where I would have preferred just to purge the top ten list but nothing’s perfect you know.

If anyone finds a glitch please leave a comment or use the Contact form at the top of the header to let me know.

Beware: Updating theme and server is burping.

Just a quick post here.

What else is there to do on a Sunday afternoon but update your theme to the newest version which means I’ll have to insert my own header once again, hack one or more theme files in order to accommodate this, that or the other plugin or preference and hunt down any bugs that might exist.

Sounds like fun. Can’t wait to get started.

Also, found out from Bluehost that there are a few websites on our server (that hosts my wife’s website and this blog) that have a bad habit of knowingly hogging all the CPU load now and then and Bluehost is currently doing battle with these idiots. So if you find the blog won’t load or that Long Meadow Farms resets on you, just wait a few moments and we’ll be back and thanks for your patience.

Going Green-Using Algae to Produce Biodiesel.

A new idea in cultivating to produce raw organic material for the production of biodiesel as is currently being tried using crops like soybeans and corn is now being demonstrated. The benefits of using algae are obvious as indicated by this excerpt form a news story from the Good News Network.

By cultivating algae as the choice food stock for biodiesel we would not only produce up to 60 times more oil per acre than if we used traditional agricultural crops, like soybeans, corn, or canola, we’d also help cut the level of our most problematic global warming gas, CO2, as the algae devours it while emitting clean oxygen.

Source: Good News Network – Algae-to-Biodiesel Fuel Tackles Two Problems (Video)

There’s an interesting video included in the article that explains the benefits. This sounds like a great idea since it takes up less agricultural land, takes CO2 out of the air and puts O2 back into it and at a very rapid rate. Sure…this won’t stop the global warming cycle but this new process, along with other efforts, may very well lessen it’s overall effects in the long run.

Of course that’s only if the boneheads currently residing in our federal government decide to put the welfare of the public at large ahead of the almighty dollar and lucrative business deals.

Or perhaps I’m being cynical. It does sound like a great idea though.

Favorite Videos. Animusic’s Pipe Dreams

The first time I saw this I actually had to watch it three times just to make sure it wasn’t real. As a lover of music and spending many years in the field (before I lost my hearing), I absolutely fell in love with this. It’s been out for quite awhile now, in fact this was Animusic’s first effort. It definitely deserves replay.
