IFollow Movement Gains Momentum

U comment, I followWhat one little plugin will do. Back on Febuary 16th of this year I posted about finding a small plugin by Kimmo Suominen called the dofollow plugin that removed the no follow tag from WordPress after a period of time set by the blog author. Little did I realize this bit of “giving back” to my commenters that I had discovered while banging around my favorite blogs would turn into a rather large movement among WordPress bloggers that is gaining momentum everyday.

So I’m passing on the list that has gone from one blog to another. I believe that it may have started on the Randa Clay Design blog (see top link in list) and has traveled on from there and now it is here. Feel free to install the “Do-Follow” plugin and then copy the list and post it on your own blog.

By the way, Randa designed the new logo.

I’m on the list also but I removed it from the list for this post. You’ll find the Randa’s logo not only in my sidebar but also under the comment form as well. Make no mistake…when you comment and include the link to your site, you’ll receive a link back in two days time (anti-spam protection there).

Ain’t link love a wonderful thing though?

IFollow Movement Gains Momentum — 25 Comments

  1. That’s the way to go. I’m fairly pleased myself for being on the ground floor and part of this movement toward a better blogging community. We started it and now we’re taking it back!

  2. Hi Kirk!
    Thanks for the link-love.
Thanks for joining this wonderful, charitable community.
BTW, Andy Beard just opened a Bumpzee No/NoFollow Community today. For all the details, click here

Elaine, the concise post I mention from Dawud Miracle is a very understandable post describing the whole phenomenon–and I not a technical person at all ;-)

Also, Gayla of MomGadget.com was the originator of the full-list. After Randa made the logo, her list is growing…and everyone who maintains separate lists gets others listed too. Therefore, Andy’s one-meeting-place online is a great gathering-place.

    Come join :-)

We’re a bunch of link-loving bloggers opening this forum we know as the blogosphere!
    Peace.

  3. @Ponn Sabra,
You’re very welcome. Seems like a very good thing indeed.

I went and joined Bumpzee and I’ll incorporate the code into the theme later this weekend. Thanks for the tip.

  4. Thanks for joining the community on Bumpzee

I have actually been planning some kind of central site for supporters of DoFollow since the end of last year.

I was going to build it on WordPress and was just waiting for one of 2 plugins for user submissions to become tagging compatible.

I had been waiting to go live with another community on Bumpzee for another topic, but there is a feature of Bumpzee, the filtering, that isn’t quite working yet.

So I decided to start the dofollow community on Bumpzee, and see how a horizontal niche works rather than a vertical one.

There has always been lists of sites that support DoFollow in various places, but that doesn’t provide a focal point, unless you like clicking down a list of bookmarks.

The Bumpzee community will highlight content, and I am constantly prodding the developers to add new features, and they are very responsive.

The “Do-Followers” just had to have a bit of time to pick up speed. I had a feeling the idea would be a big hit quite soon after the plugin was released. I’m glad that I just happened to run across it early on and was able to turn out one of the first few posts on it. I love it when a stumbled opportunity comes through. :-)

A central location was needed since the movement is gaining speed with passion. Thanks for making that happen.

  6. @Ryan,
I can’t see where it won’t. In the blogging world of “flash-in-pan” ideas and fads that fade as fast as they’re introduced, I do believe this one is going to be taken for granted. I wouldn’t be surprised if a future version of WordPress includes the option to turn the “no-follow tag” on or off built right in.
Just look at “Subscribe to Comments” and “Live Preview” or just “Preview Comment” type Plugins. They caught on as well, right?

  8. It’s always good to see these groups starting.

I’ve joined several no nofollow groups and added plugins to many of my blogs to disable this. It helps promote discussion while giving the discussers a little more incentive.

    Thanks!
    Erik

  9. Hi Erik,
I tell ya’, the blogosphere is getting downright friendly these days. Everybody out to help and entertain everybody else. That’s nice. Kinda’ reminds me of the old (and currently healthy and strong) Ham radio network. Of course that decades old network has had a lot of time to grow and mature whereas the blogosphere is only a handful a years old but I’m sure it will get there. It has restored my faith in the human race just a bit though. :P
I should update that list though. I’ve let it go too long as it is. Been awfully busy of late.

  10. Thank you for posting this! I’m a new comer and need to just find my little niche but keep things moving while I keep trying to find it and then keep letting “it” evolve. I think I need more sleep! :)

  11. @Evelyn:
Looks like you’ve already found your niche and a Google Page Rank of 3 already. Not bad at all for the time involved. Oh, to be able to visit Honolulu. Lottery, lottery…where for art thou, lottery? I could almost smell the flowers. Oh yeah, congratulation’s on your new gas staion. I take it you didn’t have one nearby before?

    @Steve:
I see some content on your site that I’m going to have to read up on this weekend. Looks like good stuff. I have got to update this list like right now. I have been remiss. I don’t even have my good friend Elaine ion the list yet. Sheeesh!!

  12. It’s inevitable that when you hit a certain size blog wise you loose the ability (Time) to weed out spam. If people catch in your Ifollow they’ll hit you hard. When get on that ‘spam’ list somehwere out there in cyber land you’re in for a ride of SPAM…. But I do see the value in it.

  13. @Barry:

I agree with you it’s a potential spam catcher. Spam just loves to ride the back links as it were. In this case I had to weigh the assets vs the liabilities and the assets won out. This has turned into a major movement and already created a substantial community that’s growing at a rapid pace and that’s what the current blogosphere has always needed–a cohesive community.

In the meantime, Akismet and Bad Behavior take care of my current spam and I always have Spam Karma 2 to throw into the mix if I need to.

  14. I have to say that I have gotten a great deal out of this movement and I feel that so many other bloggers will. I think this will open the door to many other ideas out there to create for more opportunities for bloggers to build their businesses. How has this benefited you?

  15. Hi Cade,
For me it’s been a slow but sure increase in commenters and good back links to the blog itself. I’m sure it helped me make that hurdle from a PR4 to a PR5. Being a personal type, non-monetized (well, almost) blog though, I can’t realistically state whether it’s helped any revenue or not.

  16. My blog now follows links. At first I thought nofollow was a good idea but I have changed my mind on that. After a long time procrastinating I have seen the importance of “dofollow” and making sure everything stays connected and links don’t get broken. I will follow comments on my blog, http://www.reallyreally.net I hope more people adopt these principals. Regards Bree.

  17. Welcome aboard Bree! Glad you decided to join the IFollow movement. You’ve definitely earned a place on the list (at least the one I have). :)

    How is Sam’s head? :D

  18. thats the greatest thing that could happen in the blogosphere. This plugin will motivate the visitors of the site to post on it. i really like this and i will install it to my blog tonite.
    thanks for letting me know!
