Wordpress 2.1.3 problem?
Apr 5th, 2007 by Kirk M
I seem to have found a problem in the latest version of Wordpress (2.1.3). As I was writing up the previous post using the latest Wordpress version’s rich text editor (tinymce) I found that the I could no longer insert a link into the post because the darn pop-up dialog box was blank. Hmmm, I thought. Can’t do much with a blank box. So instead of attempting to redo the upgrade I got smart and decided to replace one thing at a time starting with the entire tinymce editor directory with the one from the previous Wordpress 2.1.2 version which had no problems with the add link dialog box. So I renamed the 2.1.3 tinymce directory to something else and uploaded the 2.1.2 version, cleared my browsers cache (always clear your cache when looking for changes of this type or you might not see them and be off on a wild goose chase) and reloaded the Write Post page and viola! The problem was solved.
So something was apparently lost in the translation when the latest version of WP was put on the streets. My Wordpress install has always run well (knock on head…I mean wood) and I do try to keep it clean and tidy if not exactly W3C compliant so I do have to believe that somehow the WP 2.1.3 tinymce editor may have problems.
I left started a topic about this in Wordpress.org’s support forum with hopes that someone may have noticed the same thing.

Hi,
I’m really fed up with the frequent updates of wordpress. I still using the 2.1.2 version and not upgraded.
I really can’t blame you any.
Funny as it sounds though, the crew at Wordpress.org decided to provide updates more often and on a more regular basis due to user requests. Don’t worry though. There are plenty of WP users who are still using the older versions. The only time someone should really seriously think about upgrading is when there is a serious security problem with a certain version, usually because some outside
idiotsource found a way to hack into a particular version and a security update is released.I’ll stick with 2.1.2
I love this new plugin! A guest can finally edit their comment. Hmm wonder where I might find this useful plugin??
I guess this is a test to see if the comments section is working or not.
Thanks for confirming that I wasn’t going bonkers. I tried everything, couldn’t get the editor to work and wouldn’t you know, I accidentally deleted WP 2.1.2.
Hello Webigail,
Glad someone actually has the same problem. Perhaps not all the builds had this problem but whatever. If you haven’t downloaded a new copy of 2.1.2 yet, send me a note via the Contact form and I’ll send you a zipped up version of the 2.1.2 TinyMce folder.
And thanks for stopping by.
I’m not sure if it’s related to a bug or if I’ve messed up something else but when I upgraded to 2.1.3 I managed to lose tinyMCE altogether!! Now all I’ve got is the row of buttons for inserting HTML tags into a text box… keek!
Edit: Never mind, it appears I’d somehow turned the editor off in my user profile :\
I thought it might be that. It happens, so don’t feel too bad about missing it. Now, try using the “insert link button” and see if that works, that was my problem when I upgraded. It came up blank. if the same thing happens to you, just do the same thing I did in the post and you should be OK.
And thanks for dropping in. Hope you get your Stadium.
Man.. i regret the time i decided to upgrade from 2.0 to 2.1.3. Everything’s seems not to work anymore. My plugin crashed, i cant edit template. People can not leave their comment, gravatar wont show up. And now, i cant even open my blog.
i’ve been browsing around to find if there are peoples who experienced similar things… and now i am glad that i’m not the only one.
Hi rika,
The changes from the WP 2.0 series to 2.1 alone were many. WP 2.1 was a major revision from the previous versions of Wordpress and most of the plugins and many themes had to be upgraded to support this new version. Wp 2.1 also solved a lot of problems that were inherent with past Wordpress versions.
For now, try going into your install via FTP and removing all your plugins (except Akismet), one at a time, checking to see if you can access your blog after each removal. Knowing all the changes made when WP 2.1 was released, I can almost guarantee it’s one or more of your plugins causing the problem. if you find the offending plugins, you can then check for updates for them and then upload the new versions one at a time.
Otherwise…
If you’ve been backing up your Wordpress database on a regular basis, then there are instructions at Wordpress.org on how to revert back to your previous install (basically the same as the upgrading procedure). Once you’ve reverted to your old version (remember to always deactivate your plugins before you do this) and everything should be fine.
Hope this helps.
