Privacy and Google? What’s your opinion?

peeking I’ve been thinking about Google and all these privacy issues being bantered about in the news of late so I was wondering…

Is anyone really concerned about your privacy being violated by using Google or do you believe that privacy begins at home and what kind of private information you actually store on your computer?

And protection such as firewalls and anti-virus programs? Or how about signing in to iGoogle before you use it? Is that riskier than using Google without signing in (meaning searches)?

What do you think? Let me know. Might make a good future post you never know.

I use iGoogle. It’s scary to log in after a year and be able to see everything I’ve searched for for that long. I can tell what projects I was working on at my last job. I can tell how long I was goofing off at work and whether or not I ever got back on track. Weird.

Though not exactly what you’re after, IMHO Google sucks. I can’t get an adsense account. Some of the crappiest sites on the web have them, but I can’t get one. yahoo won’t either.

    Hi Sunny,

Sorry for the delay in replying but I work a day job.

I use to sign in also early on (before iGoogle but iGoogle’s just a name change) but I found that the searches became a bit too personalized for my taste where sometimes I got more relevant results when I was logged out. I don’t log in now unless I want to get at my account stuff. Have you thought of deleting your search records using your account settings? It’s been a long time but I believe you can delete selectively also.

On ads…how long have you had your blog up and running? Obviously it’s been up long enough for your to get a PR2 but sometimes time online counts also.

Well, the privacy concern is always there but according to me, I really don’t care, if someone reads about me or my information stored on Google server’s till the point, I don’t know that person.

But will feel bad, if someone close to me gets to read all that….because there are few things which you’ll not like to share with your known ones.

Hi Mayank (please correct me if I have the name wrong),

That is what I believe everyone is concerned about and you made a very interesting point here. Strangers don’t matter that much but those who do know you matter quite a lot when it comes to privacy concerns.

Makes one stop and think now doesn’t it?

    Oh yeah…Welcome to the blog!
