How would I perceive this blog if I were someone else?
Monthly Archives: August 2007
Another day, another $1.50…The VA changed my meds again.
No, this isn’t a report on my Google Adsense earnings especially since I don’t advertise here. It’s just a saying that we had in the Sub Force and most likely the entire US armed forces which was a spoof on how much someone supposedly calculated the typical pay per hour of an E-6 was based upon a 24 hour day at 365 days a year. And it came out to approximately $1.50 an hour. This, of course, did not include the paid days off (liberty) or the paid 30 day vacation (leave) or the free health care (100% everything) etc, etc. But still…
These days it basically amounts to how I feel about things when the day has been rather rough around the edges. On this particular day it has not only been rough around the edges but soft and mushy in the middle as well. Especially where my head was concerned. It never fails that just when I become adjusted to the prescription medication the VA has me taking, they change the line up. This time they dropped one that I no longer needed (yay!) and upped the dosage on yet another (boo!). And of course the one they increased the dosage on makes me feel dizzy and light headed (more than usual that is) until I get used to it. This usually takes about two weeks.
Wonderful. But that’s not all folks…
This medication that supposedly controls my rather high blood pressure also negates the effects somewhat of the pain medication I’m taking for a rather bothersome service connected type disability. But here’s the best part of all–increasing the dosage of that pain med to offset the effects of the increased dosage of the BP med might make me dizzy and light headed until I get used to it and guess how long that is?
Get it?
Why does the title Catch 22 keep coming to mind? Or perhaps “Damned if you do and damned if you don’t” is a more accurate phrase?
Meanwhile, I was bumbling around work without managing to break everything in site and had to made an intense effort not to sit done under any circumstance. I was afraid that I wouldn’t get up again and I’d still be stuck there now.
Ooog, what a horrible thought.
So I’m afraid the boss is going to have to do without me at the other store this week since I’m barely adequate to work my own shop as it is. Good thing I’m hidden behind my very own wall, huh?
Ah phooey, I say…this too shall pass and I shall again become used to this increase in uselessness (since it doesn’t really lower my BP any). And then…I can increase that pain med and spend the following two weeks doing it all over again…Bah!
Maybe I should just get used to feeling dizzy and light headed. Might just solve the whole problem that way. At the very least it should make my posts a bit more interesting to read.
Just Thinkin’ renewed another 2 years. So what have I accomplished?
The mail came in the other day and with it came the renewal notice for my blog’s domain name. Hard to believe it’s that time already and I’ve been banging away at this iteration of my blog for nearly a year now. Seems like I’m still starting out in a lot of ways.
So what have I accomplished since this blog first out started as “Conversation Lost” on the old Blogger site way back when?
Well….this:

Blog Lines: 9 Just a-cookin’ here ain’t we?
Technorati Authority: 65 I feel so barely officious.
What else we got here? Let’s see…
I’ve been called an
and a
blogger by Liz and a
by Micki.
I’ve posted about life at home, life as a veteran and life in general. I’ve talked about blogging, community and WordPress. Reviewed this, that and the other thing just ‘cuz I wanted too. Ranted about ridiculous antics by our so called officials and puzzled over stupid people tricks.
Some of my posts are way too long.
I’ve helped out a few of my fellow WP bloggers that were having trouble with themes, plugins, upgrading and hosts. I’ve sweated over posts that I didn’t have to. Laughed in delight and howled in derision. Growled and cursed in frustration and completely destroyed one keyboard because I made the same typo 6 times in a row.
My wonderful lady gave me one of her sub domains when I voiced my desire to have my very own WP blog (Thank you honey. Regret it yet?). And I’ve made several friends along the way and at least two real good ones. Becky helped me out when I first decided to “do-it-myself and I passed the experience on to Elaine when she first made the big move herself.
May she forgive me someday.
I almost decided to quit exactly two times. Never again.
I’ve neglected my sidebars, my links, my blogroll and the categories. I do like my header image though.
I’ve sat up till late at night and back at it early in the morning. I feel my poor wife has become a blogger widow and I’m forever thankful for her patience.
It takes me way too long to get one single post out.
I pay for the privilege of hanging my face out in public and exposing them to the strange workings of my mind. I’ve thrown the idea of monetization right out the window. I’ll never make a dime with this blog and that’s as it should be.
I’ve poured over statistics, SEO and Webmaster tools. I turned poor Firefox into a complete set of blogging tools by stuffing it so full of extensions they’re running out it’s furry little ears. I’ve pounded and hammered at my WP installation until I finally liked the shape of it. I’ve left exactly eight questions on the WordPress forums–all unanswered.
I have plugins for my readers, plugins for comments and plugins for me. But I’ve never plugged a sponsor.
I had to stuff more memory and a 550 watt power supply into my old computer just to so it could keep up.
I’ve wrapped the blog in 4 different themes and will most likely try out a few more before my next renewal.
And I’ve missed a thousand other points and people but time simply does not permit. Thank you all.
Did I have to think twice before renewing? Uh-uh. Not in your life.
Why, you may ask?
Because I’m still having a hell of a good time!
That’s why.
What do I think the future may bring?
Heck if I know. That’s the best part of it I think.
Onward…
October 15th, 2007 is Blog Action Day
Blog Action Day. When is it and what is it? It’s coming October 15th and it’s all about participating bloggers writing up a post related to keeping our environment safe. You do it in your own style and in your own way whether it be political, money related, family related, personal or whatever fits your blog’s style and context. The point is to get the issue out there in the open in a massive sort of way and what better way to do that than hundreds or even thousands of bloggers pushing out their own unique outlook about the environment on the same day?
Posts do not need to have any specific agenda, they simply need to relate to the larger issue in whatever way suits the blogger and readership. Our aim is not to promote one particular viewpoint, only to push the issue to the table for discussion.
Blog Action Day is about MASS participation. That means we need you! Here are 3 ways to participate:
- Post on your blog relating to the environment on Blog Action Day
- Donate your day’s earnings to an environmental charity
- Promote Blog Action Day around the web
Considering that the sign up started on the 14th of this month and when I just now checked there were 933 bloggers already signed up to participate, I do believe there will be an excellent chance that we’ll be seeing those thousands of voices all posting about the environment on the same day.
Think about it…

A Fix for OneClick to work with WP Automatic Upgrade Plugin

UPDATE 08-18-07
I have been banging emails back and forth between the author of OneClick and myself while testing his plugin and due to this and his efforts in making OneClick as stable as possible, he has released a new version this morning (0.9.8) that incorporates the failsafe fix as shown below. And this new release also takes care of a couple of other minor bugs so once you upgrade to the latest version, you no longer have to change any of the plugin’s code.
But there’s something else you need to know…
OneClick Upgrades Itself!
OneClick upgrades itself right from the OneClick page without the user having to do anything at all but click the upgrade link in the “Smilie” section of the OneClick page and follow two simple instructions. No going to the site, downloading, extracting or uploading via FTP required. Just click on a link right in your WP Admin and watch the darn thing do everything itself. One small insignificant bug I found in this new version is that when you upgrade from the OneClick page it will tell you that you’ve successfully upgraded to version 0.9.7 when it should state 0.9.8. The correct version number is shown on your plugins page though so no worries there…just a minor typo glitch.
So why am I taking all this trouble to keep you folks updated about OneClick? Because currently, the author is having trouble with his name registrar and his site is down. This doesn’t interfere with OneClick’s ability to upgrade itself though since the plugin itself resides elsewhere. Another reason is that OneClick along with the WordPress Automatic Upgrade plugin is going to cause a not so minor revolution in the way WordPress bloggers do things from now on. These two plugins alone will allow the average WP blogger to devote a good deal more time to writing good content and working the “front end” of of their blog which, after all, is what blogging is all about, rather than having to spend a significant amount of time upgrading their WP install every time a new security release hits the streets or mucking about with all the downloading/extracting/uploading of plugins and themes.
When Anirudh does get his site back up and running I’ll post it here and then take a back seat so he can drive.
I’m also willing to bet that we’ll see a lot more WordPress newbies around that have been previously holding off due to the complexities of maintaining the WordPress install. There’s still going to be a learning curve for any new WP blogger to work through of course, but the biggest hassles have just been eliminated for most* of us.
* I’m sure there are going to be hosts/servers out there that will keep either or both of these plugins from working due to ridiculous restrictions and lack of permissions. Who knows, maybe WordPress and these great plugin authors of ours will force these hosts to finally adopt a set standard…maybe. One can always hope.

Previous post
Two plugins that are going to change the world of WordPress blogging and the way things are done are the WordPress Automatic Upgrade plugin and the new OneClick plugin which automatically uploads and installs themes and plugins into your WordPress install. From your admin and through the use of a Firefox extension.
At this point in time, since both plugins need to call on the zip libraries for extraction a small fix needs to be applied to a bit of code in the plugin’s oneclick.php in order to keep them from arguing about it and OneClick failing in the process. Simply do the following:
change:
require_once(‘pclzip.lib.php’);
to:
if(!class_exists(‘PclZip’))
{
require_once(‘pclzip.lib.php’);
}
I happen to use a specific program to edit any php but all you really have to do is login to your blog’s Admin and head to the plugins/plugin editor and bring up “OneClick” (from the right sidebar) into the editor and scroll down around halfway until you see the above snippet of code and just make the change as indicated above. This change will allow OneClick to operate alongside any plugin that calls upon the zip libraries whereas the plugin will only call up the libraries if they have not been called up already.
The author of OneClick will be releasing an update in the next few days to the plugin and the Firefox extension to take care of this particular bug and a couple other minor problems.
That’s it…have fun. Oh, and don’t forget to drop by the author’s website and give him a thanks. Same goes for the author of WAUP. After all…they just made our lives a heck of a lot easier didn’t they?

Back from the VA. Makes for a long day
The day gets long when your up and on the road early for a two hour drive to see the doctor. I stopped by the main store of the company I work for in order to drop off some medical equipment that was too far gone for my modestly equipped service shop to repair and then stood back and watched while two guys from the purchasing department stuffed a record amount of new home medical equipment into my old Cherokee for the return trip.
The way I look at it is that if I’m going to head to a VA appointment that’s just a few miles away from the main store and service area, why waste the trip? Let’s make some room in my service area in Newport where space is at a premium and bring back some healthy machinery while I’m at it?
Besides, it keeps me from tripping over that old junk.
Next appointment is the 25th so I have a week to myself. Then it’s September 4th and the last one until January…hopefully.
I might even have time to post a bit more than these little pieces of trivia.
Have a good night.
Another 2 hour trip to see the doc…
I wonder if there’s some way to turn my old Jeep Cherokee into a small car for these trips? If anyone knows how to do this, let me know please.
Health to you all…
Just when you thought it was safe to post…
…something always comes up. But that’s okay since it was helping another blogger with a database error. It’s not fixed yet but we’re still trying. Most of the problem is with the host itself but we won’t go there.
There’s more good news on the horizon for new WordPress do-it-yourselfer’s and especially for those that have been considering doing it yourself with a WordPress install but have been holding off due to the complexities of working the backend of things such as upgrading to new WP versions as they come out and uploading plugins and themes via FTP, blah, blah, blah, etc, etc.
Well, it looks like things just became a whole lot easier for you folks due to a couple of new plugins that have recently hit the streets. One that takes care of Automatically upgrading your WordPress install which I’ve already posted about and tomorrow, after the new version is released that takes care of a compatibility issue with the aforementioned plugin, I’ll be posting about another new plugin that automatically uploads and installs plugins and themes for you as well.
With these two plugins installed, working “behind the scenes” of your WordPress install just became a lot less complicated.
Se you folks tomorrow.
