Posted by Kirk M on 06 Aug 2007 | Tagged as: Wordpress
Wordpress.org has released a security update to it’s main 2.2 branch and the legacy 2.0 branch. Since security against hackers is even more important these days than ever, I’m not hesitating at about upgrading immediately.
The blog might be get a bit funky while this is happening so please be patient and all will be back to normal inside of an hour.

Hi Kirk,
Good tip on keeping WP up to date. I helped Keith Dsouza with the AJAX portion of a WordPress Automatic Upgrade plugin. Keith recently entered it into the WLTC plugin competition. I’ve just upgraded two blogs with it in less than a few minutes. Thought you’d might want to give it a shot.

Hi Ron,
Welcome to my end of things.
I’ve been watching this plugin with interest peppered with a bit of skepticism. I hadn’t known you were working with Keith on it. With both of you working on this plugin I think I’ll give it a try with my “series in progress blog”. Thanks for letting me know.
By the way, I downloaded the latest version of your excellent WP Ajax Edit Comments v1.1.0.6 plugin when I upgraded today. Looks like I need to update my Badly Needed Wordpress Plugins post.

Yeah, I noticed you had it (Ajax Edit Comments) installed here. Was a pleasant surprise.
I played a small part in the plugin development for WPAU with just doing the AJAX portion. Keith wrote probably 99% of it, but I helped automate the process. I also helped him with stabilizing the plugin and for the most part, it’s pretty stable and should work on most hosts. It personally upgraded a 1.5 version of WP on my local install successfully when testing it.

Hi Ron,
Been using your plugin since it’s inception. I think we even pounded a couple of bugs back and forth early on (the contraction problem casing an mysql db error and not working in IE thing). I’ve gotten a couple-three comments about how my readers like the feature. I wouldn’t be without it. I don’t suppose you’d ever think about adding a feature like being able to reply to comments via the admin would you?
I’m emailing you about a problem I found with the Automatic Upgrade plugin. It may be isolated to me, I’m not sure. I’m also emailing Keith about it.

Believe it or not, Keith also wrote a plugin called Better Comments Manager that allows you to do just that.
I appreciate your feedback on Ajax Edit Comments. Users/Readers like you helped make the plugin awesome.
Keith will definitely be able to help you with WPAU. I had run into the problem as well as far as activating plugins, but that was only because my host went down in the middle of upgrading. Hopefully it’s just an isolated issue. I am very sorry you experienced issues and I know how much of a pain it is to have to re-activate the plugins you had one-by-one.

Hey Ron,
It was just that. As you may have already read in that email I sent you it was the “Do-Follow”plugin that was causing the Wordpress Automatic Upgrade” plugin to fail on reactivating plugins. I simply deactivated the “Do-Follow” plugin and then reran the automatic upgrade on both blogs and all went as it should with no problems. I have no idea why “Do-Follow” would cause it to lock up on reactivating the plugins step but it does.
If Keith emails me back I’ll let him know. Perhaps he can kick it around some.
BTW, does Keith’s “Better Comments Manager” compatible with “WP Ajax Edit Comments”? I assume it is since you recommended it.

Kirk,
They’re compatible to an extent. If you use the plugin to reply to a comment, then the comment that was just posted is not compatible. However, Keith also has an edit feature on his plugin which enables similar functionality. If you’re interested in making the two 100% compatible, I can send you a code fix, but I personally decided it wasn’t necessary due to the overlapping feature set.

Thanks Ron,
I do believe I’ll stick to your plugin and do my editing as I have been. It’s not that necessary that I reply via the admin.

I understand the recent security update is in response to this:
