A friendly challenge to those bloggers out there who’ve been around for a year or more. Republish that first post!
Dig back and find out where you were when you first started out; unsure of yourself and knowing that there was a lot to learn yet. Maybe even a bit nervous about hanging yourself out in public for all to see. And comparing that to where you are now.
It’s so easy to get lost in this ever changing online sea of the Blogosphere that sometimes I find that I’ve lost my way and ended up floundering around a bit and becoming discouraged. At that point it’s awful good to have an anchor to keep myself from being totally cast adrift and I found out that anchor was my first post.
If it’s one thing that all bloggers have in common it’s the ability to lose their way from time to time so let’s go find those anchors and remember what it was like to new, fresh and full of ideas.
If you decide to accept this “challenge”, please leave comment or trackback to this post or contact me via the contact form and I’ll begin putting together a First Posts list that I’ll publish here. If you have multiple blogs, pick the one or two that seem like the most appropriate.
Now let’s see what happens…
Technorati tags: your first post, first post

Hi KirkM –
My first post at Hmm (see signature link) on July 4, 2003 begin with “this is my first …” — luckily, things got better from there, although that post did tell folks how to access the site from a shorter domain (mughd.com) that still exists and is useful for mobile phones, portable devices and the like where typing is at a premium.
My second post offered six reasons readers should download and try the iRider browser (yes, it’s still available, 4+ years later) was a better quality entry and precursor of what was to follow.
Thousands of posts later would I post anything differently than these first two posts? Nope, wouldn’t change a word of these first two posts, although I would and have already changed the category. Originally the category ‘default’ was used on some 800+ posts and I’ve been fixing that here and there over time to better describe the content of the original posts.
A category named ‘default’ is of no value to anybody: me, readers or machines (SE). Readers will still find quite a few ‘default’ category posts, but I’ll get them cleaned up eventually.
The new blogs started since Hmm I’ve typically used the first post to describe the intended vision of the blog. What type of content could be expected, how often readers should expect updates and so forth. Just did that with a new blog that launched on Thursday, in fact.
Since you indicated that one or two would be fine, here is the first post made from our VTOR group blog on MMO and virtual worlds:
http://www.vtoreality.com/2006/welcome-to-virtual-reality/3/
Thanks
Hi TDavid,
The first one here. Good deal. I’ll take both since one shows the absolute beginner and the other shows a first post by someone with a bit of experience under their belts.
I’m going to let this run on a bit before I actually post the first version of the list of course.
Welcome aboard!
Technically, the first wasn’t a post from “the absolute beginner” — that isn’t even my first blog, but it’s the first one from the blog with the most eyeballs today, which might be more useful for others to look back at than seeing the absolute beginner first blog post. At least from me. Others mileage may vary.
Thanks for being willing to link them both

Thanks Rob!
You are a gentleman and a school bus driver! (don’tr ask…it’s late).
On the list you go.
I want one of those.
Yes, they’re still available – and with much better memory capacities!
Victorinox SwissMemory multitools
Morning Rob, (at least for me that is)
I like it!
Alright! Now when I have money to burn and want to impress folks I can whip out my Swiss Army USB and/or MP3 player. With a laser even. I wonder if they make them in the bigger models. The ones with the saw blade in it? That way I could cut wood for a campfire and listen to some tunes at the same time.

Am I too late for this? I do notice things way too late these days!
I’ll post my first post on my blog in a bit, writing on another post at the moment!
Absolutely not Cat! The list will be going on for some time since you’re not the only one who thinks they see things late. Despite the fact that the WWW might be fast these days, folks still have to notice things and now they have a whole world to notice.
Really glad you want to join in…I’m truly honored!
Oh, spread the word around will ya’?

Done and done.
My first post is definitely a ‘blast from the past’! And rather short.
And I got it! In fact, I just posted the first edition of the list just a few moments ago.
Thanks much oh slow internet person you.

Haha, well thanks to you for this kewl idea!
I sure will forward it to El Catnip.
Life has been so busy these days I’ve been updating my blog when ever I have free time so things are usually done half done. Thanks for adding me to the list and I’ve linked above!
Hi Sha
Life does have a bad habit of getting that way doesn’t it? I sometimes have to force myself to haul in the reins and just get off the wagon for a day or two just to maintain what sanity I have left. And again, many thanks for joining in the “challenge”. Glad to have you on board!

Alright, I’ve done it too. A little late but pretty much on time by my standards lol.
Not a problem Ish. This is an ongoing type thing and I’m glad you decided to join in. On the list you go then.

[...] This site suggested we should re-post our first blog entry. Well, what you guys probably don’t know is my archives on this site aren’t complete. I actually started this blog back in March 2002. I had a server cutover which lost some of my posts. They are saved thank goodness on my hard drive in html files. Because I wasn’t smart enough to realize you could export posts at the time in Movable Type. So they’ve just been sitting there. [...]
Cool challenge. I particpated.
I am off to check out everyone elses first posts now.
Hi Dina!
And welcome. Glad you found the “challenge”. Hope you enjoy the rest of those first posts.
