The JT Evening News-First Edition

Welcome to the first edition of the Just Thinkin’ Evening News (JT Evening News) which will be published whenever I feel like it. The subject of the JT Evening News will usually consist of things that have to do with this blog and general WordPress items that have caught my attention, limited as it is. In other words; whatever I feel like blathering about.

And so…with further ado (whatever the heck that means):

WordPress 2.3 RC1 and this blog…

This blog will be upgraded to WordPress 2.3 RC1 when it released early this week (supposed to be Monday). The majority if not all the bugs will be worked out by then and hopefully the upgrade will go smoothly enough.

Strange as it might seem, newer bloggers that have recently gone to their own WordPress install and haven’t yet fallen into Category Hell (having too many categories) and haven’t added some sort of tagging system yet will have the easiest time upgrading. It’s the more seasoned WP bloggers that have all sorts of category related functions out the wazoo are going to have trouble since the the structure of the category DB is radically changed. The problem with tags is of a different nature.

Although there has been much praise for the beta builds of WP 2.3, I’ve seen various comments on different blogs including the WordPress.org forums that use the words “shocked”, “surprised” and “stunned” that there is absolutely no tag management anywhere in this new version of WordPress. Including tagging abilities in the core is great but not giving the user any ability to manage their tags (as any current tagging plugin includes) is akin to including 6-way power seats in your new car without providing any controls.

It probably seemed logical to the developers to just add the simple ability to add tags to posts and then let someone else write up a plugin that adds management features so make sure your current tagging plugin is compatible with WordPress 2.3.

Republish Your First Post List This Sunday…

The current “First Posts” list will posted this Sunday with all who have participated in this little community project of mine. It’s not a big list yet but I’m hoping as time goes on others might include themselves as well. Either way it’s been fun and a definite learning experience for myself.

Like having the post “Stumbled” and causing a rather large increase in visitors over a two day period.

Whatever Happened to “Absolute Beginners WordPress”?

Well…I’ll tell ya’

Due to severe lack of time and my various service-related health issues, I simply wasn’t able to maintain the series, this blog and myself at the same time. I save all the posts and the DB for the series and will probably repost the series here under it’s own category sometime after the upgrade to WP 2.3 (and problems ironed out thereof) and I’ll even redirect any old 404 pages for the original series to the series posts here once they’re republished.

Sorry about that folks. I had to grit my teeth and force myself to finally come to the realization that my health comes first and as long as I have to work a day job…well…I’m sure you get the picture.

That’s it for this first edition of the JT Evening News (published whenever I feel like it). And since I intend to make this a regular type item (see above parenthesis) I’m going to give it it’s very own category…even though I have too many already…I’m working on it though…really…I am.
