Well now, I’ve just upgraded the blog to WP 2.3 RC1 and the old style category tables in the MySQL database are finally gone in favor of the new taxonomy tables that takes their place. And with it went one of my old standard type plugins I’ve had since day one. The Top Posts By Category plugin that ran my Top Ten page that used to hang out at the top of my header image along with the other various pages of ill repute. Unfortunately, old TPBC queried the DB category tables directly and now they no longer exist so bye bye Top Ten page for now. I left a comment at the author’s website in hopes that there might be an update to this plugin but I figure it’s one chance in two at best. Either way, I figure there’s bound to be something else coming down the pike that will do the same type of thing sooner or later.
So what does this mean for other WP bloggers? Well, like I’ve said all along, it’s the new WP blogger whose blogs aren’t stuffed with plugins and hacks that depend on the old category structure that will luck out this time. Upgrading should be a breeze for them. For those of us that have been around for awhile and have various tags from plugins and tag related functions thereof and the above mentioned hacks and plugins that might run into a problem or two. The real question is; is upgrading to WP 2.3 worth it?
Absolutely!
I’ve no complaint at all with what I’ve seen and experienced so far. WordPress finally feels like a more solid and mature product than any of the previous versions. And the developers at WordPress have obviously been hard at work ironing out the bugs especially seeing that this release candidate was scheduled to hit the streets this past Monday. Better late than buggy I always say.
For those of you who might be wondering what plugins are working correctly with WP 2.3 RC1, check out the WordPress 2.3 plugin compatibility list and just for giggles you can also check my Plugins I Use page for the ones that work with this blog as well. In either case, make sure you note the version number of the plugin.
It’s fast and solid and I only lost the use of one plugin and that’s not bad at all.
