Well here it is finally. The first snow of the winter and November has lived up to it’s reputation around these parts. Up here in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, we don’t pay much attention to any of the “official” dates of seasonal change. The official day of Spring for instance can be 10 below with a blinding snowstorm howling through your ears as you attempt to bull your way through the drifts to that big mound of snow that you’re hoping is your car. This, as you might ascertain, is not conducive to thoughts of warm sunny Spring days and pretty flowers all over the place.
The official start of the Winter season gets about the same amount of attention where Winter up here can start any time after the 1st of October however, when November rolls around, you finally realize that there’s no turning back. It’s the final link between Fall and Winter like it or not and today it arrived. Not with the usual slam, bang like some years I can recall but it arrived nonetheless.
The morning was the key. Yesterday it was around 53 degrees by noon and a rather beautiful day but this morning dawned soaking wet and 38 and by 1:00 PM the white stuff was coming down. It only lasted for a couple hours but it was enough to cover the ground with about and inch and a half of snow and some of the side roads with about a half an inch of snush (cross between snow and slush. I’m sure you know what I’m talking about). It may have turned back to a bone shivering cold rain by the time 3:00 PM rolled around but the word had been given. Time to put the broom, the telescoping heavy duty snow brush, 75 pound tube of sand, milk crate full of “just in case” items and the “dig me out” shovel into the back of the Cherokee. Winter has arrived.
You describe what I dislike worse about winter: the snush. It’s cold, dirty and gets in your car and house. Cold wet feet. Yuck.
I wish we had constistent snow here. Or snow at all. How much snow do you usually get?
Btw your blog is ridiculously slow when i submit a comment. It’s been like this for days. From the moment I hit submit until it finally gets posted takes about 40-70 seconds..
You and me both Sixty.
Hi Cat,
We’ve gotten over 3 feet in one storm last winter. Varies year to year.
I’m writing these replies logged out and the last one posted in about 5-7 secs. There are times when it does seem to take a longer. I just changed something in the backend so it might improve some.
Thanks for letting me know.
Maybe it’s due to me being all the way across the pond?
Three feet of snow sounds great! When can I come and visit?!
EDIT: 29 seconds..
Morning Cat,
I think that’s a distinct possibility. That plus the fact that this blog is an add-on domain to my wife’s business website (static html type) which she manages with MS FrontPage and WordPress and FrontPage extensions are not compatible. So every time she updates, we have to clean out all the vti_cnf folders that are plastered all over my WP install via our host’s cPanel. Otherwise it kills all the redirections within my various pages…especially comments. If someone leaves a comment before these folders are removed, the problem like you describe occurs.
More than you needed to know? Hopefully someday I’ll have a chance to move the whole thing to my own account.
You like the idea of 3 feet of snow? Well you’re welcome anytime you wish to come. We have a real nice sofa bed and 3 cats to harass you during your stay. Have you ever built a snowman or had a snowball fight? Heck…I’ll even teach you how to run the snowblower. Of course timing your flight to get you in just before a major nor’easter slams us might be a bit tricky but I’m sure we could pull it off.
Edit: 6 seconds
Good afternoon!
Your explanation makes sense. Thanks.
I’ve had snow before in Germany, I was more saying we don’t get snow here in the South of the UK. So yeah, done the snowman/snowball fight.
Although there’s only about 2 feet of snow if you’re lucky in Germany.
