Haven’t switched me yet

Apparently they haven’t switched over my server entirely yet even though the PHP Config page in my cPanel says that it’s in place but couldn’t complete the change over due to some fatal error or something to that effect.

Talking to tech support informs me that that’s what I and anyone else is going to see for any server that’s still running PHP 4. That leaves me with 3 choices.

  • I have to wait until the my blog breaks entirely upon the actual switch to PHP 5 before I can go in and try to get it back up and running again.
  • Run with absolutely no plugins activated except for Aksimet and hope they get the changeover finished before Christmas.
  • Spend the next week trying to find out if all my plugins are PHP 5 compatible, upgrade/delete the one’s that are not and hope the hell I didn’t miss any.
  • Giving it all up for loss, deleting blog and going back to paper, inkwell and quill.

An once of prevention and all that. It would have helped immensely if Bluehost had actually announced to the public at large that this was going to happen. I realize that PHP 4 isn’t long for this world and hosts have been delaying this upgrade far too long already but not letting folks know is completely unacceptable. So am I for that matter but so far I haven’t crashed anyone’s blog…yet. :P

Hellooo plugin authors.

Update: I have been duly informed that I actually listed 4 choices instead of 3. I stand corrected. I’ve got to check the dosages on the medication again.

  1. I will be letting WordPress know of this issue from one of their “recommended” vendors.

I’ve also left a post on the forum under “Your WordPress”. I’m not sure if that will get the attention it needs but we’ll see.

Hell of a mess this is going to cause.

So is my blog going to crash or what? I’ll be really pissed off if it does! I’m disappointed in the way Bluehost handled this.

  4. KirkM says:

Unfortunately Elaine, it’s entirely possible but we’ll get you (and most likely me as well) back up and running just like “Sixty” when it happened to him earlier today.

Bluehost’s conduct in this matter is completely unacceptable. So now we roll with the punches and complain later I guess.

You realise you listed 4 instead of 3 options, right?! :P

And don’t go back to pen and paper!

I stand corrected and added update. Thank you for your kind attention.

Can’t find the darn ink anyway and the quills busted. :P

  7. I looked to do a back-up and lo and behold it’s gone! Good luck tomorrow.

    Ah…but it’s back now isn’t it?
