After reading reading over at , I’ve decided that this is my new goal in life. To own an abandoned abandoned missile silo. Man! Talk about the ultimate basement! Hell, all I’d need is a hatch opening onto a front porch topside and the rest could be all underground.

Nope, not a hatch…an elevator!

Turn This…

Into this…

I just gotta have me one!

I just wonder how you’d heat the thing. Heck, if I could actually afford something like this then I’m sure I accomplish such a small thing as getting central heating and air into an entire missile silo complex, wouldn’t you think?

  1. Well, it does sound interesting!! As for heating, surely it’d just be a standard central heating system? Or if you have a lot of sunshine maybe go solar?

You realise that if you do ever get this that I will come all the way over there just to see it?!

Oh and may I kindly ask you to update my blogroll to http://carocat.co.uk Thanks :)

  2. Yup, I’m with you. Except I would miss the sunshine. But I know you can get those long tube things to bring in natural light.
You would minimal heat/ac because underground is a constant 56 degrees F.
When we croak, they just plant a marker and lock the hatch!
The only drawback is most of these are in Kansas, right?

  3. Sorry I’m late folks wresteling a test WordPress install into a workable Shopping Cart site for my lady’s online Handmade Quilts business. Do you believe they actually have a plugin that does this?

    Anyway…

-> Hi Cat! If I ever have the opportunity to get me one of these things you’ll be the second to know and your welcome anytime! Bring your tools. :)

Since these things tend to be placed in the wide open spaces I’m sure there will be plenty of sunshine. And I’m changing your link as soon as this is posted.

-> Hey Sixty! Good point on the heating and I like the “light tubes” idea. What a hoot! The more I think about it, the more I want one. So if they’re all in Kansas they’ll be tornado proof now won’t they?

Yup, Weld the darn thing shut and I want a brass plaque that says “I’m Fine I told ya’!”

  4. Cool on the plug-in for a shopping cart -
    Love your epitaph.

  5. Better than saying, “Hey doc!…Aarrrgh!” But know that I think about it, that’s just in line with my sense of humor if I find myself passing on in a hospital. :D

  6. Hey sixty…you get this?

  7. If this is one of the sites in upstate NY, and I’m pretty sure it is, I’ve been there. It was more or less abandoned when I visited. The people who are trying to sell it have been trying to do so for years. They wouldn’t let me tour the inside of it, but I wandered up to see it anyway.

I wrote about all of these places last year. Here’s the story.

  8. Wow, now that’s what I call a double coincidence! Not only had I done up this short article referencing the original, more in depth one but after reading the original, my wife and I wondered if there were any placed in Vermont or the North Country in general. And being a Cold War Submariner, I had a specific knowledge and interest in these type of things. Unfortunately, life kept us too busy to do any research to that effect. And here you are with the answer, an excellent article and slide show to boot!

Very glad you took notice and let me know.

    Thanks Susan!
