Browser Stats-Another Look
Posted by Kirk M on 12 Jan 2008 | Tagged as: Firefox/Thunderbird
Time to take another look at who’s using what browser to view my own small corner of the Blogosphere here at Just Thinkin’. I did this once back in November when a mad desire to know what kind of browser was being used to view my site overwhelmed me into finding such out and posting about it.
So let’s begin with what Net Application’s Market Share says for the month of December, 2007 as far as browsers are concerned:
Well, looks like IE’s slipped a bit (3% or so as compared to this time 2006) and Firefox 2 has gained approximately the same amount. Okay, that jives with what the news has been saying over the past few weeks. It will be very interesting, for those of us who are interested in such things that is, as to how the stats will shift this year when Firefox 3 hits the streets in it’s final form since the adoption rate I feel will be rather rapid among Firefox users. And I’m betting that’s it’s going to take a significant chunk out of IE’s popularity as well once word gets around about how fine a browser Firefox 3 actually is.
Alright, enough plugging my favorite browser, I’m supposed to be talking about browser stats for my site here right? Well I can tell you they differ somewhat from the Global stats above as you can see below:
Looks like Firefox has moved to first place as compared to the Novembers stats I took for that previous post of mine where IE had the lead at 52.47%. Can’t say as I’m unhappy about that. At least I know the site will render correctly for 52.26% of my readers anyway. Actually it renders okay for folks using IE 6 and 7 also but here’s hoping more of them make the move to a better browser this year thus taking a bit more pressure off the website developers who have to do up to 3 times as much extra work attempting to make their sites work in Internet Explorer. And yes I’ve heard the talk about IE 8.0 but I wouldn’t hold my breath about it being released this year that’s for sure.
Anyway, that’s the stats for last month for anyone that might be interested. Hope you appreciate all my hard work.

FYI, your site renders beautifully in Safari. I’ve never been a fan of FF since on all of my Macs it seems to load slower, yet still much better than IE which I won’t even install on my Macs.

Hey, welcome back! Forgive me all to you know where but I plain forgot about sticking you in the sidebar. That’s me all over, mind like a steel trap–full of dead rats.
Anyway, thanks for letting me know about how the place looks in Safari. I used to have Safari for Windows loaded to check this (don’t know if it renders the same as the Mac version) and Opera as well but I’ve since reloaded my OS and haven’t bothered with reinstalling. Suppose I ought to huh?
By the way, I checked out that new Flash version of your site that you’re working on and let me tell you what…When that television flipped into my face like that I must have backed up the chair a good foot or more. Quite an effect you got there.

Thanks for the welcome Kirk! I’ve been lurking in my RSS reader for a while as work has been busy. I’m not sure how much difference there is between OS’s for Safari, I know IE makes huge differences between them. FF is pretty similar across all.
I’m glad you like the TV. I need to get back to finishing that up in the future.
Oh, remember my mention of moving up there? Well, it’s happening in a few weeks. I’ve still got your advice in my mind, although so far I’ve been pleasantly surprised with the kindness of my new neighbors.

Good deal! And all the friendly ones came from out of state BTW.
Okay…we’re not all that bad actually but you can’t be too careful of who you tell that to ya’ know. Down country folks might get the wrong impression if it got around.
So welcome to the neighborhood for real then. Would you remind me again please where your place is? My mind has been offline of late. Too much going on for my three and a half brain cells to handle all at once.

You are mostly right, about the flatlanders being the friendly ones, but some locals are friendly too.
The new home is way south in Windham, which as many people say is hardly Vermont anymore. I don’t care what they say. I’m paying the taxes, I’m in VT.

“which as many people say is hardly Vermont anymore”
Oh really? Bah, I say! Don’t believe ‘em…not for one minute. If you’re across the border, you’re in Vermont, period. If you stay across the border for 5 years, you’re in for good.
Doesn’t matter if “creeping civilization” has invaded southern Vermont. It’s there because we allowed there in the first place. If you have natives saying this to you it’s just to see if it gets your goat or not. If it’s “out-a-staters” that don’t live in Vermont saying this, then poke ‘em one in the snoot. What do they know?
Just remember, if you stay long enough you’ll begin to feel this strange desire to move farther north–to get away from “creeping civilization”.
