And a Little Child Shall Infect

I should have known better. How many times has this happened before and still I did it again and now I’m suffering the same type of consequences. Will I ever learn?

To understand the last bit you need to know something about me and that something is my immune system. It’s a rather good one actually. Fights off anything that comes along. Suffice it to say that I could walk barefoot (with open blisters on the soles of my feet no less) across a shag carpet smeared with "Essence of Bubonic Plague" and the worst that I would suffer is possibly a sniffle or two. That’s it. Does that mean I don’t get sick? That I’m one of those types that never has a single cold in their entire lives, those who tend to be disgustingly healthy until they drop dead "after a short illness" anywhere between the ages of 46 and 62? No, that’s not what I’m saying at all. Those people are resistant to disease and other types of nasty’s but when it comes down to fighting off one of those nasty’s that happen to get past that resistance, their immune system is almost nonexistent.

I’ve walked through hallways of sick and suffering coworkers coughing and hacking their way to whatever department meeting they needed to infect with the glow of health surrounding me, passing out small boxes of facial tissue to those that had run out and offering shots of for the other unfortunates that had that "sniffling, sneezing, coughing, aching, stuffy head, fever like they needed to rest" feeling. Besides, it made the meetings much more fun when half the occupants were feeling miserable and the other half was sloshed on cold medication.

No my friends, despite my problems with these rotten service-related disabilities of mine, when it comes down to regular flu’s and colds I still walk healthily among the sick and infirm whilst they chuck wadded up used facial tissues in my general direction in exasperated vexation. In fact there’s only one single flaw, one major weakness in my armor of immunity and that is…

Kids! (especially under the age of six)

I can kiss my fevered and flu-ish lady ten times a day, breath the same air that sick people have sneezed in without fear of infection but get me within 100 feet downwind of a sick child and I’m done for. For all intensive purposes I should be banned from even thinking of picking up any child under the age of puberty sick or not. Alas, but it is all in vain. I can’t help myself, I’m just a pushover when it comes to little kids. I love ‘em. And they love me too, always have and when I see that little face looking up at me I melt all over, up they come into my arms and I’m making with those silly noises that most adults revert to in the presence of any kid between the ages of zero and when the kid actually starts stringing sentences together. In fact I hold the world record for helping little kids find their lost parents in big box stores and largish supermarkets and I pay the price nearly every single time.

I have come to the conclusion that a small child’s sole purpose in life is to test the immunity system of any adult they encounter. Those that fail said test keep the makers of cold medicines and various antibiotics in business and this time it was my newest (almost) grandchild that took me down. It was our usual Sunday dinner with Laurie’s youngest son’s family. As soon as I walked into the apartment, "Young Sir William" (just turned 16 months) was in my arms and in his delight he gave me a loving package of fresh, infectious diseases that now have the possession of my entire body along with a fever of 102 to make the whole thing complete.

I should have known better.

So here I am today after two absolutely miserable nights (I actually managed to fight it off for nearly two days) feeling like I haven’t felt since I had rheumatic fever as a kid. Joints screaming, alternating sweats and chills, throat feeling like someone took a wood rasp to it and sinuses like Niagara Falls. And all for the love of a child. When will I ever learn?

Better be gone by Sunday dinner though. I’m slated to be "Young Sir William’s" horse this time (for as long as my back and knees hold up that is).

A 2 Day Snowstorm-Minding the Shop

The Northeast Kingdom is looking forward to a two day snow storm beginning around 10:00 AM this morning and guess where my better half is right now? About 2 hours south of here attempting to take care of the usual quilt shop business that springs up around this time of the year (first sign that her selling season has started). In light of this, I’m "minding the store" as it were while she’s out and about getting as much business taken care of as she can and hopefully getting back here before the storm hits in earnest.

I hate it when this happens.

But living up here in the "Kingdom" one must do what one must do in spite of weather. If you tried to make exceptions you’d never get anything done.

So if anyone stops by today, think good thoughts about Laurie and her travels through yet another snow storm that’s about to slam New England especially the areas she’ll be driving through. I’m sure she’ll need all the positive vibes she can get…and me too.

Irish Missile Launched at Newport, VT. Lands in Tree

Grandad launched a (left over Russian Cold War era) Missile at my town today but instead of exploding properly, wreaking death and destruction everywhere, it instead embedded itself in my neighbors tree.

(Photo Courtesy of via a Weather Satellite reentering the atmosphere)

It’s obvious that Grandad had to have his neighbor, Spanner, do a bit of modification on the delivery system. Didn’t know you could deliver a multi warhead ICBM using a Piper Cub before. says he used the plane to record the explosion but I know better. I scarfed all the nuclear material from the warheads embedded in the nose of the plane (no wonder it crashed–too nose heavy) and I’m currently adapting it to my heating system. With any luck I’ll have me a nuclear powered furnace percolating in my basement within a couple of days and then I can tell the local oil company to pack sand. Thanks buddy!

Canuckastan to Invade Vermont.

Okay, let me explain. No, too much, let me sum up:

  • launched an ICBM at Chicago due to a Canadian spammer that wasn’t.
  • In retaliation, arranged to divert the defunct spy satellite clobbering missile and have it blow up a bog in Ireland.
  • The subsequently diverted missile hit instead. That’s it. Nothing more on this end. Just thought I’d mention.
  • Because the missile strike on Chicago by Grandad constitutes an Act of War by Ireland against the United States, the has decided to declare war on Quebec.

Okaaay…

  • K8 the GR8 is wondering what’s wrong with us. (actually has absolutely nothing at all to do with this post and it’s subject in any way shape or form. I just felt like including her ‘cos I think she’s neat, her post is thoughtful, well written, insightful and the title just fit in so well).
  • Sixty, not being satisfied with just sitting back and enjoying the show got back in the middle of it and now .

We trade Vermont and Massachusetts Senator Ted Kennedy for Quebec and four “tractors” from Canuckastan. Then we will trade Quebec to Ireland in exchange for Grandad calling a cease fire on tourists buses and agree to run a tourist information booth in town.

I couldn’t possibly have explained how this happened hence the quote. I still don’t understand.

  • And something about being sent from Ireland to Canuckastan to help with the invasion. For which particular invasion I can’t tell you.

Is everybody as confused as I am?

For a more in depth look at the story, follow the link above to Sixty’s article which covers these amazingly idiotic events and all the other links while your at it just in case you find yourself feeling a need for self abuse.

In the meantime, I’m breaking out the Molsen’s and my old tapes and just maybe we can lure the invading Canuckastanians all the way to new Hampshire and leave them there.

The Media’s Desperate-Judging a Candidate by Their Sexual Prowess

The so-called other woman The media is obviously getting so desperate to bring some sex based political scandal into this year’s election free-for-all that they’ll even try accusing a 71 year old man of having an affair with some young blonde lobbyist back when he was 63…

John McCain, ex-Vietnam veteran and all-American hero, was forced to deny an affair with a young blonde lobbyist yesterday as a sex and ethics storm engulfed the race for the White House.

The ‘mistress’ who could destroy that man who would be President… and the wealthy wife who’ll back him to the hilt | the Daily Mail

Sorry, it just doesn’t hold water. So what if he did? Who cares? Show’s that he had some life left in him but this does bring up what I feel is a very important question:

What about now?

Could he handle the same kind of alleged affair at ? Does he still have the physically prowess for a weekend’s romp and hustle around the old bedstead? These are important questions indeed because if he’s come to the point where he is not capable of even one night’s worth of heavy breathing, the kind of oomph to accomplish what basically amounts to a rather simple and natural function, how the heck is he going to be able to handle the very real affairs, responsibilities and pressures that come with being this country’s President and Commander in Chief of our armed forces? If our boy (or girl for that mater) in the White House isn’t capable of a good healthy extramarital affair, real or imagined, then I’m sorry…I’m votin’ for the other guy…or….gal as the case may be.

Just a pragmatic viewpoint here.

Forums, Wikis and Bugzilla, Oh My!

I finally dredged up the courage to join two rather scary groups over the last few days. Well, at least somewhat put-offish for me to say the least. And those two groups are and the (shudder) . Now the problem for me isn’t the fact that I’m not a developer nor programmer (I’m a software tester and have been for over 20 years), it’s the damn markup language differences that get me. That plus the differences in the overall functions between each platform that’s making me grit my teeth in frustration and sometimes even embarrassment.

Take just now for example. I submitted a comment (is that even the correct term?) to a particular “bug” page concerning flash powered dynamic scroll bars in certain sites driving Firefox 3 CPU usage to near 100%. I had found a site that does this in the nightly builds but not in Firefox 2 which would make a great comparison test case blah, blah, blah. But I wasn’t sure on how to post the actual link to the site which brings me to the meat of this post…

There just ain’t no standards! It’s the 21st century and there’s still no standards on the Webernet!

Point in case:

In the above example I had to guess at which type of format I would successfully need to use to put the following link into that post at Bugzilla in order for it to show up like this:

www.wcax.com

Now in a WordPress comment box and most forums that I know of, the format would look like this (without the quotes):

“<a href=”http://www.wcax.com”>www.wcax.com</a>”

But in a “Wiki” based platform like the WordPress Codex it needs to look like this (again, without the quotes):

“[http://www.wcax.com www.wcax.com]”

Or do I just type the it out the actual URL and hope for the best?

Since Bugzilla is it’s own platform and not actually based on something else I really had know idea about the correct way of doing this and I couldn’t seem to find a “Help with posting” type of link such as the Codex provides for those new to Wiki markup so I finally defaulted to old standard HTML. That should be safe enough, right?

Wrong!

Turns out that all I had to do was type the actual simple URL. Instead I ended up posting a link that looked something like this:

<a href=”http://www.wcax.com/“>www.wcax.com</a>

You have no idea how embarrassing that is. Not only that but 347.568 emails were sent out and CC’d to every person who was involved with or “watching” this bug and when I went to correct this foible (no edit?) I found that yet another 347.568 emails were sent out once again. So in an act of pure vindictiveness (Lord, forgive me that I should do such a thing) I posted an apology for the double posting just so I could see yet a third round of 347.568 emails sent out telling each and every one of those “watchers” that I was sorry for being new to Bugzilla and screwing up all over the place.

It’s all do to standards or the lack thereof. Hell, there’s not even any standard to Wiki markup language I found out when I was searching around to see if there was such a thing as a local Wiki editor or a plugin for Windows Live Writer. Apparently all Wiki platforms are not created equal either. Although it all may be similar among the different Wiki platforms, the markup is most definitely not the same. Thankfully the WordPress Codex has a fairly straight forward markup guide that I can go by and the built in editor has a decent preview mode so I catch mistakes before I go public.

With having to learn Wiki markup language that the Codex uses, dealing with Bugzilla, forums, different comment forms, , PHP, CSS, Google Groups, various Microsoft forums (all different) and just plain old HTML, it’s become very clear that I simply do not have enough time left to learn all this crap before I die.

Why couldn’t all this happen when I was younger?

Have You Seen The Flickr Blog?

There are plenty of photo blogs out there but one of the better ones you may not have considered is the Flickr Blog. This blog includes some of the best Flickr photo’s within various member’s posts just like the great shot below from this post by Heather Champ I ran across:

Looks like she’s still flyin’ along doesn’t she?

If you want to have a look at some great photography from folks like you and me then take a gander at the .

Raven Rises from the Ashes

Zoundry's next generation WYSIWYG blog editorIn the days before (WLW), my blog editor of choice was . This local blog editor worked well enough but definitely had it’s share of bugs, enough so that when Live Writer came on the scene Blog Writer was gently shown the door. Months passed and occasionally I went back to Zoundry’s website just to see if they’d disappeared yet and much to my surprise (and just a bit of satisfaction I might add) they were still there. But things appeared to be stagnate with no further development in the works to be seen.

Then one day I dropped in and lo, there was . It was still very much an egg at that time but there was a lot of noise surrounding it as far as the loyal followers were concerned of which I one although my loyalty was best described as latent to be sure. But there was always the appreciation of the first local editor I ever used when I first began blogging.

There’s a lot in this editor to like for instance downloading and displaying all the tags from a WordPress based blog for example. And adding the ability to link highlighted text to various reference, search and blogging/bookmarking sites. For example the Windows Live Writer link above submits the linked text to Technorati as a search and the results page is the link itself. I also like how Raven breaks down a blog into it’s separate parts as in Posts, Links, Images and Tags, these being listed as “folders” in the left sidebar of the main window. Clicking on any one of these folders displays quite a lot of information about your posts, links, images and tags depending on which “folder” you click on. I was quite surprised to find that selecting a single post from the list displays that post in the bottom preview window using your selected template that you downloaded from your blog via the built in template manager. Nice touch that.

I won’t be leaving Windows Live Writer for this anytime soon since Raven still has those bugs and quirks you’d expect from any beta like automatically adding tags for any tags I type into the Tags field. For WordPress blogger’s that means that the Tag field automatically adds any new tags that you don’t currently have in your database (good) but automatically adds these tags as Technorati tags at the end of the post (bad). There are times when you don’t want to necessarily add Technorati tags to a post but by what I understand there’s a additional tagging option in the works that will allow the user to select any additional services in which to add tags to such as Technorati.

One thing that I still don’t see is an inline spell checker which is an absolute must for me. Otherwise how else will I be distracted from focusing on my writing? I guess I’ll just have to make do with the old style spell checker and just find another way to be distracted.

I’ll be posting more on this at a later date. :P
