Feels Like April in Virginia in Vermont

Good God, it’s 80 degrees out according to my weather sticker in the sidebar or it was when I began writing this post and I have to agree with that. I just came in from working out in the yard with Laurie’s youngest son, Kenny (he and his family live upstairs) and by the time we tied up the last ancient bush in the old hedge row (forgot what type of bush it is), we were sweating like it was midsummer. Seems kind of weird to have to watch where your stepping due to the last few remnants of the winter lurking in the shadowed areas. We still have a good pile of snow in and around our tent style shed out back.

80 degrees and slipping on icy snow…only in Vermont….or maybe Michigan too…who knows?

So here’s a few pics of our endeavors to finally rid all the creepers, trash plants and crap from what used to be a well manicured gardens full of bushes, mini-sunflowers and the occasional tulip. One in the middle of the yard with an old Silver Maple as the center piece and one out by the railroad bank where the miniature sunflowers will come to glory during the late summer through early Fall.

Silver Maple   By railroad bank

Front stoop

In the first 2 pictures above both areas around the Silver Maple and by the railroad bank (the guy with the rake is Kenny) used to be a solid mass of creepers, bamboo and trash plants. Laurie and I started working on it 2 years ago and all 3 of us at different times or together went at it once Ken and company arrived at the upstairs apartment.

And it felt like April in Virginia out there even though the lawn looked like it should really be around 55 degrees with a frigid wind blowing off the lake. grass must still be asleep. This should be the height of mud season for heavens sake but it looks more like late May to me and the weather folks are calling for nice days with the temps between the high 60′s to mid 70′s all the way through next Saturday.

So what is this? Global warming or something? The way things are going it will probably hit 112 degrees by the 1st of August with tropical rains every 3 days. Either that or Lake Memphremagog will dry up…all 27 miles of it.

Guess I can put away the snow blower now and pull out the old hammock, huh?

Dead Internet

For those of you waiting for a reply to a comment or perhaps another one of my fine posts, I’m sorry…you’ll just have to wait some more. The reason for this is that for the last 2 days my computer refuses to hook up to any wireless connection put out by our DSL wireless router (the new one) but this time I’m the only one with the problem apparently. This morning I managed to talk my Windows XP into actually hooking up but I found that there was a mysterious 4th wireless signal bouncing around that doesn’t belong to our router. So where is that coming from I wonder?

Either way, the connection is now racing along about as fast as a slow dial up and I just can’t wait 3 hours for my Admin to load. When things return to normal or a solution magically appears (nothing is apparently wrong with the computer, USB adapter or the router) then I’ll be back. Until then…have a great weekend.

Update: 04/18/08

Okay then…it appears that my wireless/dead slow DSL problems have magically cleared up. This is very irritating to say the least as I would have much rather experienced an "oh, so this is what’s wrong" sort of thing but I’ll simply have to put up with a "oh…so it’s just working all of a sudden is that it?" type of experience instead.

Alrighty then…

Heading to Bean Town

Tonight, after supper, I’m headed down for an overnight stay at the VA in White River Junction, VT in order to catch the van in the morning for the Jamaica Plains VA in Boston, Ma tomorrow. All for what most likely will be a 20 minute follow up to a procedure I had done over a year ago. Yeah…they (admittedly) screwed up so instead of having a 2nd procedure like I was supposed to, I have to go away for a day and more just to have a follow up I don’t need. Oh well, I’ll yell a little while I’m down there…that will make me feel better.

I’ll be gone until late tomorrow evening in case anyone comes around knocking on the door and finds no one home. Virtually home that is. :)

Getting off the Trunk-Firefox 3 RC1 Upcoming Release

I’ll be getting off the Trunk here real soon now. After several months of using the nightly builds of Firefox 3 (called "Minefield"), the first release candidate went into which basically means no more new feature or function changes, beat any showstoppers into submission, send to build and QA, QA, QA.

It should be out soon is what I mean.

So why does that mean I’m going to finally chuck the Trunk? This is why…

The Trunk always remains the Trunk irregardless of the release schedule. Trunk builds are what you might call the "cutting edge" of developing software where fixes are incorporated and released on a nightly and very often an hourly basis. Every morning I have a new upgrade to my browser I get to download and install. But once Firefox 3 is delivered in it’s final form sometime in June, the Trunk will go on while the developers continue work on the next version (like 3.5 for instance). I ran the Trunk builds of Firefox 3 for these reasons…

  • I’m not satisfied with simply waiting for new beta builds to be released (I want it now! Okay?).
  • I was bored (c’mon…let’s be honest here).
  • I like to see new features and functions as they are implemented and professionally critique them (ha-ha-ha-arf-urf-woof-woof-woof-fall off chair).
  • I enjoy offering my two cents worth to the developers (and I do).
  • They in turn get to work off some of that pent up frustration by telling me to get stuffed (and they have).
  • I like having new features before anyone else does. I really like having new features before anyone else does.
  • I’m obsessed with upgrading (yes…I am…I admit it)
  • I’m just an old tech head who craves new things (drool, foam at the mouth, pant-pant-pant, etc)

But now it’s time for all that to end. As soon as RC1 is released I’m off the Trunk and onto the Branch waiting for June and the final release. The reason is simple. The Branch consists of the released versions only, not the developer’s builds and only the Branch will be finally upgraded to the final release of Firefox 3 so when RC1 shows up it will be time to back up all my bookmarks and such, remove "Minefield" from my OS and install RC1 in it’s place. Then I can re-install my plugins and extensions and I’m ready for when Firefox 3 final comes out. The Trunk will be done with Firefox 3 quite awhile before the final release ever hits the streets so the time to get off the Trunk is now.

So you all know the difference between branches and trunks now. The branches are the long gangly things that stick out into the air and have leaves at the end and the trunk is that big, cylindrical, wooden like thing that comes out of the ground that the branches are attached to. Sometimes there are bugs running around on it. Hope you all paid attention, there might be a quiz later.

A Six Word Meme

Here’s a meme of a different flavor that tagged me with. Even so, my head immediately came up with what you see below but for some reason I waited several days before doing a post on it.

I have no reason for this.

Anyway, this is supposed to be a six word memoir accompanied by the image of your choice that might reflect said memoir. My mind never hesitated and came up with this:

"Forgotten in a fugue of forgetfulness"

Ghost-Ship

I’m not going to attempt to find out just why my somewhat bedraggled mind came up with this (I found the picture just as quickly like it was karma or something) but I’ll admit that there are times where the picture above is true enough in which the phrase "All at Sea" comes to mind.

I’ll think I’ll tag , and with this. I don’t usually tag folks much with these things but this one I felt I just had too.

Lousy Streaming Video in Firefox? Don’t Blame the Browser.

So you’re trying to watch an old Star Trek episode on the site using (2 or 3) but much to your dismay you find that the video is choppy and dropping frames, ruining your plan to go where no man has gone before. You also might realize that suddenly your faithful old single core processor that’s kept it’s cool through everything you two have been through has suddenly come down with a bad case of heat stroke. Well, if you had checked your task manager (in Windows that is) you would have seen that Firefox.exe was running your CPU at 99% while playing the video which would explain why all your PC’s fans now sound like the engines of a WWII B29 Super Fortress running at full bore. Bloody Firefox, you say? Internet Explorer 7.0/8.0 plays the video just fine?

Don’t blame the browser.

Firefox doesn’t stream videos…the Shockwave Flash plugin does and that particular plugin for Firefox made by has a problem. For those of you who don’t know, Adobe makes 2 different Shockwave Flash plugins. One for IE and one for Firefox which is also the same plugin that Opera uses and if the streaming video you’re trying to view in Firefox is causing all sorts of problems attempting to view the same video using Opera will produce the same results.

What the exact problem within the Flash plugin for Firefox actually is I can’t tell you, I’m not a programmer. But the bottom line is that it has to be fixed. It’s simply not good enough anymore to simply shrug our shoulders and say well, it’s been like that for 3-4 years now so why bother? Here’s a good reason posted by one member of the Mozillazine Forums in response to someone else’s question; “Why bother?”:

Because Adobe’s grand long-term strategy is for Flash to become a legitimate platform (I, for one, hope that this strategy crashes and burns, but that’s another issue) and severe performance issues like this aren’t very conducive to that goal? And also because there have been a few instances in the past when they did care (for example, this one).

Here’s another reason:

Firefox 3 has basically been rebuilt from the ground up and the results of that overhaul are obvious and plentiful. Firefox 3 is a real honey of a browser. It’s light, fast, easy on the memory (finally) and full of new features and functions. The point I’m trying to make here is that if a heavily used plugin like the Flash plugin is providing terribly poor performance in Firefox 3, that plugin is going to stand out like it never did in Firefox 2. It’s like rebuilding a vintage Chevy V8 from the ground up and installing the old leaky fuel pump on it. So what’s the solution?

Feedback, feedback, feedback! I can’t stress that enough. Test it yourself. Those with dual core processors might have a smooth playback but will show around 70% CPU usage (IE delivers the same video at approximately 14%). Here’s what you do (Windows users only. Sorry, don’t have a Mac at present):

  • Using Firefox, head to this website and load up any single episode of any of the old classic TV shows (I like the old Star Trek personally). Don’t play the video yet.
  • Bring up your Task Manager and monitor Firefox.exe (just highlight it so you can see it easily).
  • Now start the video.
  • Check your Task Manager for CPU usage for Firefox.exe and note the results. (Single core PC’s might become somewhat unresponsive. Just pause or stop the playback to solve the problem).

What you should see is CPU usage peaking at approximately 99% for a fairly recent, single core processor and around 70% for dual core processors. Video playback in PC’s with a single core processor should be choppy and erratic plus Windows may become a bit unresponsive. Dual core PC’s should see smooth playback but a heavy load on the processor (around 70%). Once you’ve seen the results for yourselves, now comes the feedback.

Navigate yourself to the support department at Adobe, Shockwave Flash division and fill out this feedback form on what you saw. Make sure you select Firefox and Flash or Shockwave from the drop down menus provided in the form (the plugin is actually called Shockwave Flash but since that isn’t a selection…). Be brief but concise in your description of the steps of your testing and the results you saw and above all–be professional! If you wish to see this problem fixed then don’t get loose on your feedback. I guarantee they won’t bother with it.

Caution: Submit only one feedback please and if you don’t do the test, don’t submit any feedback meaning; don’t just take my word for it. We’re not trying to flood Adobe with this, just get their hopefully positive attention. They’re (Adobe) probably going to yell at me for this anyway so please don’t make it worse. :P

Those of you with blogs can of course post about this if you wish.

That’s it. And just so everyone understands, this post is an effort to get something that needs to be fixed, fixed. It’s not an attack on the good folks at Adobe in any way shape or form. The bottom line here is that Firefox 3 is our browser. User feedback has driven a very large portion of it’s development so far (yes…it has) and even though Mozilla can’t help the performance of Adobe’s plugin, we, the users, can. If you want something fixed…make some (reasonably productive) noise about it.

Note: I’ll most likely call for a halt to this within the next day or so. It’s bad form to keep submitting the same feedback about the same problem over and over again even if it’s by different users.

Fluffing the Covers

So what about yesterday’s VA trip? Well, I’ll tell ya’…

I went down to see my provider whom I call young Dr. Young. He’s an intern from just like all our other interns we have at the VA which in this case means a youngish married male with the perpetual smile plastered across his face and carrying an irritating condescending air about him. I don’t believe he’s actually trying to be condescending, it’s just the way they teach them nowadays. He’s also terribly naive I’ve found out and put all these things together and what you get is the antithesis of what a doctor dealing with crusty old vets should be.

The reason I know that he’s most likely led a sheltered life is when I asked him about the side effects of the new diabetes medication he was giving me in place of Metformin (called Glipizidumwhobenwhassits or something) the last side effect he mentioned was flatulence. Well, I just couldn’t resist. I immediately remarked that I had no problem with that one…

I told him I liked to fart in bed and fluff the covers.

I swear, the guy’s face turned the color of a ripe cranberry…and he actually started to giggle. He reacted as if he never heard the word fart used in a sentence before. Of course I couldn’t stop there when I had finally managed to break his usual calm, perpetually smiling veneer…

“C’mon now”, I said. “You can’t tell me you haven’t done that yourself”, referring obliquely to his married status…

The guy’s face went even redder and the giggles got worse (he denied it of course). In fact he nearly slammed his head into his keyboard from being caught off guard (again). Of course I had waited just long enough for him to start typing again before I said this. Unfortunately (for him), I wasn’t done yet…

3..2..1..

“Has your wife ever done it to you?”, I asked innocently…

That was it. He was off his chair and facing the wall. The giggles turned dangerous…I thought he was going to get a cramp or something.

After 2 years with this guy who prescribed me medication that I didn’t need, upped the dosage on another medication right after I told him I was having a adverse reaction to it (it was raising my blood pressure instead of lowering it) and to this day is still trying to tell me that working would be better for me psychologically than not even though he damn well knows that I’m no longer physically capable of it…

I had my revenge!

As our session ended and I was walking out the door I threw a passing remark over my shoulder…

“Now don’t forget what I said about fluffing the covers”.

I left with the sound of his cramped giggling wafting up the hallway.

Last month, I had requested a change in providers.

I’ll meet the new one in September.

I believe it’s his supervisor. :D

Crocus Among Us

The warmer weather is officially here! I looked out my front porch window at the old flower bed that the original owners of the house had planted who knows how long ago and lo and behold, there was a crocus (or whatever) in full bloom. Of course I had to take a picture of it just so I could share it with all of you. Ain’t that nice of me?

So can I put the hammock out now or what?
