Losing my Mind Again-Upgrading to 2.6 beta 1

Posted by Kirk M on 25 Jun 2008 | Tagged as: Misc posts

Yup, it’s that time again. My absolute addiction to using beta software has left me no choice but to once again update my WordPress install to an official beta 1 release of the upcoming version which in this case is WordPress 2.6.

Things are libel to get very wonky here during the upgrade but as long as the usual morons on my shared server don’t decide to try to upload several hundred photos to their gallery or send out 1000’s of mass mailings (as they’re not supposed to do), the upgrade will be done in less than a half hour.

Green Mountain Geek, my new outlet for my T/G (Tech/Geek) psychological problem has been running 2.6 trunk builds for the last week or so without any problems and has been already updated. So far I’m loving the new features.

Okay then. Like I said, things might go wonky but it’s just me doing satisfying my horrible craving for MORE!

Update (shortly after this post was published): Yessir! The morons are up to it again and have slowed the server to a bloody crawl once again. My host keeps kicking them off and they just never seem to get it. Thing’s will run fine for months on end and then there will be a few weeks of non-performance when the latest batch of numskulls sign on and think they own the whole server.

Please stand by…

I gotta say Firefox 3 is really pissing me off… I’m getting regular crashes (yes I send the report thingy) when I try to blog.

The “awshit” bar is totally unimpressive. So far it doesn’t recognize anything I type in and gives me really weird responses that have no relationship to blogs I visit often - mainly MY OWN FRIGGIN’ BLOG!

Google RSS reader and FF just do not get along.
Google keeps giving me a red error bar.

Safari just doesn’t have any of those problems. But it has issues too.

So I bounce around between the three.

And you have a nice day!

    Hey Sixty,

Wow, something’s definitely wrong there, I’m not seeing any of these problems nor the crashes and my location bar “adapted” long ago to what sites I visit most including my sites–works really well. Which one are we talking about now, the Windows version or the Mac version? And did you upgrade over Firefox 2.0.x when you installed Firefox 3.0? If you did that might be why you’re experiencing problems (corrupted profile).

Try this first. Open Firefox up in Safe Mode and set it to disable all your extensions and then check something like Google Reader to see if that red bar comes up. I’d be interested if it works or not. If you have anything like ScriptBlocker running it’s going to cause that exact problem. Extensions can be the number 1 cause of crashes also. I haven’t had any yet since RC2 was released.

    Anyway…

A corrupted profile is relatively easy enough to fix. You just backup your bookmarks by both backing up the DB (a .json file) and exporting the .html file (both done via “Organize Bookmarks”) and then uninstall Firefox 3 and doing a fresh install. Once done, you just restore your your .josn DB file which gives you everything back including bookmarks and “Bookmarks Toolbar settings) or you can just import the .html file which gives you back only your bookmarks and nothing else.

Of course you’re going to have to reinstall your extensions again but that’s really not such a big deal unless you’ve got dozens installed.

You shouldn’t be having these types of problems at all so I suspect it’s extension related or a corrupted profile causing these problems. Let me know how you make out.

    Hello again,
I just added Oldbar addon to ditch the awshit bar,
and tried to use CookiePie which allows multiple logins on Firefox, but that pooped out too.

Sorry, we were both writing and then I got distracted and didn’t see you 12:17 post.
    Extenstions = add ons?
This is on the PC - I’m not on Mac for web stuff anymore.
I only have the one which I just added Oldbar…
I’ll give it a go and report back.

If you don’t mind trying out an experimental add on the new “Old Location bar” extension is supposes to return the function of the Location bar in Firefox 3.0 back to 2.0’s way of doing it. You’ll have to sign into the Firefox Add-ons site to download it since it’s experimental or create an account plus you’ll have to ditch the “Old Bar” extension before installing.

I still don’t get it. Why is it working fine for so many people and lousy for just some? One of these days I’m gonna get me 3 different home computers. One Mac, another for dual booting XP and Linux and a third for Vista. When Windows 7 comes out I’ll get a frickin’ fourth rig as well. Want to talk about troubleshooting then? Mwuaha-ha-ha-ha!!

I unabled add ons and restarted, reboot, refurbished, reloaded, and reupped.
    No problem now.
    Maybe it was Google’s problem.

I am running FF 3 naked again (no add ons- not that I’m nude.)

BTW: your site design is really nice. Stop it. If you got rid of that weatherunderground widget it would be one of the cleanest sites evah.

    Hey Sixty,

Glad you got things straightened out although I’d recommend you install at least the “AdBlock Plus” and “AdBlock Filterset.G Updater”. Makes your surfing a lot less annoying.

Happy you like the looks of things around here. I finally rid myself of all the graphics, MyBlogLog and GoodBlogs hoo-ha’s out of my sidebar and I’m ready to lose that weather gadget also. Good suggestion. All those doo-dads really accomplish is to slow things down.

By the way, take a look at my other site
and let me know what you think of the theme. I’m considering just wrapping this theme around it instead of the one I’ve got. Okay, so I’m boring but I’d still like you’re two cents worth.
