Time to Split

That’s right folks, it’s high time I split this business! I’ve had enough of this blog of mine being filled with subjects that simply don’t coincide with one another and it’s past time to call it done with and split….
…the blog into two pieces that is.
So no, I’m not quitting the blogging business, I’m just splitting the tech/geek stuff off to a new site I’m currently working on. To explain further read on…
My first and only original blog, Just Thinkin’, first started out nearly 3 years ago as just a personal type of thing running on the old Blogger service (under a different title) and that went on for 6 very frustrating months or so until I moved it to WordPress.com as Just Thinkin’ and finally to it’s own custom install (here).
In it’s own install, things went a lot better until that fateful and inevitable day when my old tech head/geeky-ness reared it’s ugly head once again and as a result more and more tech type posts involving Firefox, WordPress, various blogging tools and writers, tips and tricks, how-to’s and more began to sneak their way in amongst the personal and opinion type posts to the point that over half the traffic I received was tech related. Meanwhile, Just Thinkin’ was supposed to be evolving into a more “Boomer” type “IM[not so]HO” type articles which were being overshadowed by the tech related stuff. This obviously was not where I wanted Just thinkin’ to go so I needed another place where I could put these “geek” posts.
And so was born Green Mountain Geek. It’s not even close to being the finished product yet but at least now I have a place to put the tech/geek articles instead of trying to blend them in here. It might even be a fairly decent site once I finish setting it up, ya’ never know. Until then, wear your hard hat.
In the meantime I’ll be editing several of the existing Firefox and WordPress posts, bringing them up to date and republishing them on GMG even though it’s not finished yet. The idea is to keep anymore tech type posts off of here so I can finish turning Just Thinkin’ into what it should be.
The theme to GMG is called Structure and the blogging platform is WordPress (of course) and I’m going to have a hell of a good time writing for both of these sites or at least I will once I finally manage to get things properly set up and that horribly (and wonderfully) complicated theme figured out.

Excellent idea! Makes a lot of sense, and you’ll probably get a lot more juice on your tech blog by keeping your IMHO’s elsewhere.

But I guess for SEO you need to have something more geeky in your URL?

Thanks for the luck! Here’s hopin’.
On Green Mountain Geek, I’ll let the “All-in-one SEO” plugin handle most of the SEO part of it and as soon as Google’s Webmaster tools lets me submit the damn sitemap (for some reason it says the site is blocked from Google by a robots.txt file that doesn’t exist–working on it), I’ll have the site indexed within a couple weeks. Maybe I’ll have the thing finally set up by then. The way things are going, it may take longer than that.
Of course that means the visitors to Just Thinkin’ will probably drop from the 200 to 300 a day that I get now by a factor of 10.

I visited your Geek blog but could not comment there. I am not sure if you know about Searchles but it is a bit like Digg only a lot friendlier. I posted your blog to it and left a description about it. I like both of your blogs. I think I found you on the Blog Log community, too. My name is Rocque whever I go if it is available. Some guy from South America has the name, too, so we compete for it.
I love the new Firefox and finally have one that works on my computer.
Hopefully Searchles will get you some visitors.

Hey Rocque (and welcome!),
I recognize your online name as well if not where I’ve specifically seen it before. Sorry about not being able to comment on the new GMG blog, I had a anti-comment-spam type plugin acting up after an update. I contacted the author and he sent me a another update that turned off the a new feature he had put in that wasn’t working so well. You should be able to post a comment now with no problem. Perhaps, if you get a moment, you could try commenting again just to make sure? I’d appreciate it if you could.
Nope, never heard of Searchles but I more than appreciate you posting about my sites there. Green Mountain Geek isn’t anywhere near the final product yet and working it up can be slow at times (disabled vet dealing with…well…the disabilities as it were) but it’s getting there.
I’ll check out Searchles and your site as well as soon as I can. Right now there’s a break in the rain (finally) and I need to go out and mow the jungle…er…I mean, lawn.
