Surgery is on! With or Without Sugar.

Three times a charm they say and in my experience what they say (in this case) is often true. In parley with my surgeon down at the Boston VA yesterday we finally came to an accord. Surgery will take somewhere between the 15th and 30th of April, exact date depending on what her monthly surgery schedule looks like.

And sugar readings be damned!

The surgery clinic down there will be calling me around the 15th of March letting me know the exact date. The only reason for the 6 week delay is that I have an endocrinologist working with me now that has taken me off my current diabetes medication and started me on another or will if the new medication ever arrives in the mail (it’s really expensive by what I understand and the VA has to approve it) and my surgeon wants to see if that works any better than the old one did.

Taking this most recent trip to Boston as the second round with my surgeon, the third and final round will be when they lay me down in the operating theater in April. No pre-op needed since the last one will still valid. Just a final blood workup so she knows where she’s at as far as risk of infection due to possible high blood sugar levels. It does mean a prolonged visit in the hospital for a week or so afterward while they pump insulin into me until the initial risk of infection is over but that’s fine with me.

The only irritant with that will be the lack of a device to access the WWW so I won’t be able to moan and groan online–post-operatively speaking. And the Boston facility having wireless access no less. Oh well, can’t have everything.

Besides, it’s probably a good thing not to publish anything while one is bombed on morphine?

Well this is good news indeed!!! My 2 cents…bet you won’t be in there for a week following surgery. Secondly…nah you won’t be bombed on morphine. Should I lend you my iPhone? You would have email, facebook, and twitter…what else do you need except cute good looking young nurses (don’t hold your breath on that one though).

      Hi Elaine,

By what I understand the post-op “length of stay” in the hospital depends on my sugar level and A1C results going into surgery and how well they can control these afterward. My surgeon is super sensitive about ‘risk of infection due to high sugar/A1C levels’ considering the nearest neighbors in the area where she’ll be working are the lungs, liver and heart. So what’s to worry? :P

Lend me your iPhone? I wouldn’t dare…not down in Boston. Too easy to go missing whilst I’m recovering. That’s a fine offer though–thank you much!
      >>start whine
      I wanna netbook!
      >>end whine

And actually, I had fine looking young nurses and student nurses (every – single – one – of – them…really) the last time I was down for this surgery so I’d probably get large old battle axes this time around. As long as they know what they’re doing, right? My surgeon is still beautiful though.

  2. Good News!
Ah, go ahead and borrow Elaine’s iPhone. I would love to read your posts with you hammering on those keys on ANY kind of drugs.

At least – post some pix!

    • Kirk M says:

      Hey Sixty,

Actually I don’t think iPhones have any keys whatsoever which ought to make it all that more interesting. I’ll have to think about pictures though. Can’t see why anyone would want to see pictures of crusty old vets with tubes stuck in ‘em laying about their respective beds. Of course snapshots of good looking young student nurses is an entirely different matter altogether.

Blogging on morphine, that would be a hoot. I’ve been known to post after taking my medication to sleep. That is very dangerous, indeed.

I just thought of a new business.. rent iPhones to patients like they use to do with TV’s.

    • Kirk M says:

Now that’s a fine idea! With a special discount for VA hospitals (we get our TV for free)? But now that I think about it, cell phone use is generally banned within the hospitals themselves so I think netbooks would be more the thing. Cost about the same.

  4. Elaine says:

Nah cell phones aren’t banned, and if they are it’s on a floor with cardiac monitoring and even those nowadays generally allow cell phones.

Good luck with it all and if possible blog whilst full of drugs – its bound to be better than some stuff on here!!!!!

    • Kirk M says:

Now Kate, are you saying that I’d write better stuff if I was under the influence?

      • Kate says:

I was not referring to you my friend – for all I know thats what you do all the time, and why not if it works – its just some of the stuff I read on here – well maybe I just make bad choices……..

        • Kirk M says:

No worry’s, Kate and I can’t really blame you for wondering about what I write here. A lot of it has a satirical bent to it and my sense of humor can be somewhat unusual at times. It started out as just a simple personal blog at first and over 3 years or so has wandered all over the place as my life changed rather drastically. I’ll be the first to admit that my posts over the last 6 months have been pretty poor.

Perhaps it’s past time to retire this old beast of mine and start anew? This blog lost it’s focus quite awhile back.

          • Kate says:

Well mines not much to waffle about really ….. this one started as a place to rant while I was having my breakdown last year. It did me good just to write stuff, any stuff ….I think thats all its about really – somewhere to off load – you definitely need it while you are in hospital – there must be a way – even in Boston!!!

          • Kirk M says:

Hey, I like that. I take it the blogging helped? I love the concept–therapeutic blogging. That’s excellent.

I’ll do my best to find a way to get online during the stay. I’d love one of those netbooks (then I’d have lots of keys to fat finger) but finances are limited as you might guess. Still, where there’s a will and all that.

Warning: This comment might not be threaded since I have the threaded comments limit set at 5 max. No telling where this one will end up. :)

  6. Kate says:

Yes – it helped …. ranting has always helped me in times of stress. .. same here on the money front but as The Beatles said it ‘can’t buy me love’ so maybe that’s a good thing.
