Relief from aches and pains doesn’t necessarily have to come in a small brown bottle with a prescription label slapped onto it or bought “off the shelf” at the local drug store. Sometimes it comes in a box truck.
A new mattress and box spring is due to be delivered hopefully before I even finish writing about it or shortly thereafter. It will replace the 20-something year old set of the same brand name that has developed some rather severe troughs on either side of the mattress that we have trouble climbing out of in the morning. It’s also causing some rather troubling spring sized depressions here and there on our bodies that take some serious massaging in order to get the blood circulating again.
Although it was originally one of the better brand names with some sort of fancy patented independent coil spring suspension system that keeps one of the occupants from bouncing out of bed every time the other occupant has a bad night (posi-traction?), said suspension has definitely seen it’s better days. In fact the cats had even started to complain about it.

We bought the Simmons Beauty Rest Classic Plush to be precise. Same set as the old one albeit with an 11.5″ mattress rather than the old 7″ that was standard thickness 20 years ago.
Had one with a pillow top a log time ago. Wonderful mattress. Amazingly expensive too.

Anderson Cooper hasn’t had a new mattress – ever. He was on Regis and Kelly as co-host and they discussed in depth his aversion to mattress shopping.
He spend $6000 on “bedding” – no mattress. Just some random info.

And good for Anderson Cooper. Glad he can spend six grand on bedding but is too chicken hearted to buy a frickin’ new mattress fer cryin’ out loud.
Amazing the difference a good pillow and mattress can make. I dread travelling for that very reason.
Hey Quickroute – It’s amazing indeed and I know what you mean about the traveling part. Of course if the mattress you have at home is horrid then traveling sometimes offers significant improvement?
I find that I always pick hotels based on how I think the mattress and pillow will be. Ultimately, I have great experiences in selecting hotels where the mattresses were top notch.

Sometimes before buying new mattress it’s better to just take your stuff off the bed alltogether and sleep on the floor for couple nights – it can be really beneficial for your back.
Firany – Considering the current condition of my backside I’ll stick to just switching over to a mattress and skip the floor. Appreciate the advice though.
