I have this book. It’s a rather lovely book you see and it came in the mail just the other day after traveling all the way from the UK to my doorstep.
It must have been awful tiring.
It has several fine features that I can certainly appreciate in a book . And seeing as how I’m an avid reader with many thousands of pages under my belt or the back of my eyeballs as the case may be, I’m awfully picky about my books these days.
I can appreciate that the covers are pre-creased at the inner edge of the binding which I’m positive is to help prevent the book from becoming dog eared. I consider this a nice touch.
The book counts every page meaning that there isn’t a bunch of pages at the beginning with roman numerals at the bottom of the page like they were saying that these pages are “special” nor is the Introduction considered separate from the rest of the book as if it was ‘above the rest’ of the pages in some manner. In fact the Introduction is the first numbered page of the book–page 11.
The book has exactly 222 pages which does not count the blank page at the end. This is as it should be (why would a blank page count for anything?) and is obviously for jotting down notes and such for later reference. And a full table of contents as well so it doesn’t keep you guessing.
I like the pages. They’re nice and thick unlike those tissue paper thin pages you find in some other novels. You never know when you’re going to get to a really good part in one of those tissue paper novels just to find out that the paragraph that ties the whole thing together has been torn from page 256.
I appreciate the font. It’s the just the right size which means I can read it easily. Anytime I’m not forced to use two pairs of reading glasses when perusing a good book is a fine thing don’t you think?
Of course the content of the book is an excellent read as you might have guessed. I don’t mind the occasional cussing by the author now and then, he’s earned the right and after all–this is Grandad we’re talking about. He also has a literary style that just keeps a smile on your face from page 1 to page 222 with a several guffaws thrown in for good measure.
And it has wonderful words in it like: Póg Mo Thóin
So if you’re looking for a good book that is just about guaranteed to brighten up the dullest day then have a look at Head Rambles. It’s destined to be a classic, no doubt.
Nice job. You noticed a lot of details that escaped me. Like the “guffaw” part. But that part may have been where the bullet went through my book.
Sixty – That’s what you get for shooting a perfectly good book. You took out all the good parts.
The reason it starts with page 11 is because if it started with page 1 it wouldn’t have ended on page 222 which is a nice round number. I like nice rounded numbers, like 222 or 666.
Grandad – That’s why I like it. I started counting the pages from the first even though they had no numbers on them. I wanted to see if page 11 was actually page 11 and you hit it right on the mark. Nice job!
I had to work on that one for six months.
You achieved you goal then. Isn’t it a fine thing to see the results of all your hard work turn out?
Hi there. First of all, I enjoy reading your thoughts here. I visit every few days and know that it will be worth reading.
Secondly, I was wondering if I could “borrow” your words of semi-wisdom and perhaps post them as a life lesson on my own blog. I love the sentiment there…it’s also a lesson to me; one I really need to learn. I won’t unless you say ok. Either way, thanks for writing.
Hi Carol J. – Welcome aboard!
Feel free to use that semi-wisdom I threw up there and anything else you might see. I didn’t make that particular one up myself, I just happened to remember seeing it somewhere and it fit my mood at the time. It’s a fine reminder not to let these day to day ‘bothers’ get me down.
Glad you found my mental meanderings to your liking. Looking forward to seeing you around now and then. Now if I could only get my mental (okay…and physical) self together enough to keep posting on a more regular basis.
Thanks Kirk…I appreciate it.
I love the sentiment from that little bit of “wisdom”. Now, if I can just take it to heart and live it!
If I can figure out how to work the little link thingy when posting to my blogs, I’ll use it to put your name in. If not, then I’ll just mention you there…I’m still learning, too! Happy rainy Friday to you!
Hi,just poking my nose in for a sec.Enjoy your writings very much.I went to 60′s too for a poke-around.Maybe granddad has 1 too.I have a question(u know I’m new to this) what is that little brown box,top right corner, that says rss2.0 feed reader(something like that,u’ll know)Everyone who reads this can stop their snickering anytime now.Never too late to learn,or is it?I’ll be back. yours,Sandi (ktsnanny)
Hi Sandi – No one’s laughing here that I know of.
That little brown thing at the top is what you call an RSS feed. They come in a few flavors, RSS 2.0 being one of them. Either way, what it does is provide of “feed” of a blog posts that you can bring up in any type of feed reader. Just clicking on the feed icon will show you a no-frills version of my posts (or G’dad’s or 60′s). By “subscribing to these feeds via a feed reader (like Google Reader) you can have all the posts of all your favorite sites in one place without having to surf from one site to another. It’s a quick and easy way to keep up with your blog reading.
Of course to comment you have to actually wander over to the respective blog post but it’s just a matter of clicking on the title of the post in your feed reader which will take you there. That make any sense, I hope?
Wow, and I wrote this without my first cup of coffee. You must be something special.
