As some of you might know, I’m an old[er] geek. I spent the majority of my adult life feeding my geek so to speak what with having nearly 30 years in some sort of computer related field or another. And now that my disabilities have removed me, temporally or permanently, from the work force my inner geek has despaired on how empty the cupboards of technical fodder have been.
Until I (re)discovered the world of Linux distros. And this (re)discovery brings me to the Irish.
Uh…what?
I love the Irish. I don’t know why. Is it because they have a certain way of putting things I find I can always appreciate? Or maybe it’s because they managed to polish the act of complaining down to an art form? The accent? All of the above?
Well, whatever the reason, I’ve always felt some sort of kinship with these rather outspoken, irreverent, anti-politically correct folks who always seem to be able to see things as they are and have no problem in saying so. A terribly refreshing change I might add as I’m often of the same mind myself.
So what has this to do with Linux distros? Well, just this.
I found me an Irish OS.
And it’s green:
I love this thing. It let’s me do all the stuff Windows does not including writing this post using Windows Live Writer in a virtually machined Windows XP. It’s a fine first cousin to Ubuntu with all the functions Ubuntu doesn’t have out of the box, it’s light on it’s feet so I can run on my old beast of a PC with no problem and I can dance with it all day without a single complaint.
And no, it’s not just “Ubuntu with a new theme” (surprisingly enough I even like the green).
Now all I have is whip a batch of virtual ink for when this sucker runs low and I’ll be set.

You love us because we are all cuddly?
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but just because it looks green, it doesn’t necessarily make it Irish. Look at snot for example. On your screen photo, there isn’t a single drop of Irish in evidence.
I suggest you go into your setup and select the language Gaeilge.
Heh.

Grandad – I tell you what, you change your OS to Kazakistanian and I’ll change mine to Gaeilge. That way we’ll have an equal chance of understanding our own computers. And Linux Mint is made in Ireland (as I’m sure you know).
And cuddly? Well sir, I’ll shake your hand and buy you a pint but I’ll leave the cuddling to the female types you have over there. Fair enough?

A thabhairt suas mé. Ní féidir liom teacht ar aistritheoir áit ar bith ar líne a iarracht a aistriú sin.
But Google Translate handles English to Irish? No guarantees that it does it well though.
Grandad – I updated the image. Irrefutable proof that the OS is indeed Irish. Is that more to your liking?
That is much better.
