Oooowwww-I went to the dentist this morning for the last in a series of VA approved procedures that consisted of removing 3 broken teeth (all molars) and one filling, the last removal and filling I had today. My dentist, who actually is quite good, saved the worse for last–the last meaning that this particular broken tooth still had a live root in it plus most of it’s hardware still in place. If I had to do it all over again I think I would have done this one first and just got it over with since the others being were much older, deader than a doornail and a piece of cake compared to this one.

Saying this one particular tooth was stubborn is like saying that Frodo Baggins just took a day trip to Mordor to return a lost ring.

When applying a pair of hook-jaw locking pliers to the task, bracing a foot on my chest and having his dental assistant haul away on his belt for good measure didn’t budge the ornery piece of chewing equipment, he finally achieved success by duct-taping me to the chair and using a block and tackle rigged to a beam in the ceiling with the hauling end of the rope run out the window. This was attached to the 3 point hitch of a medium size, diesel powered, 4 wheel drive farm tractor his brother-in-law had brought over and running her in low gear the tooth finally came out. Once they bolted my lower jaw back in place, I was done (good thing we were in farm country or I might still be there).

The saving grace of all this rather painful fracas is that I didn’t have to pay a dime for it which is just as well. I always thought that having to pay the exorbitant fees charged for dental work these days and all the pain and aggravation involved is akin to being kicked in the face after I’ve been clubbed to the ground. I may not not be too fond of this particular service related disability of mine which was the reason behind all this dental work but at least I had the work done without having to go bankrupt to do so.

Now for a couple of Percocet and a few days of soft food and I’ll be right as rain. Next time though I’m bringing a glob of plastique and a roll of detcord. Diesel fuel is expensive nowadays.

This is the end of an age indeed.

He broke all the rules and made us laugh while he did it. He showed us that it was alright to be ourselves, showed us that we shouldn’t take life so seriously, not to sweat the cheapshit so to speak.

He was “Al Sleet” the Hippy Dippy Weatherman, playing his sax (badly), predicting never ending rain for the Netherlands, increasing dark towards evening and showing nothing but lows all over the country while stating “…what this country needs is a good high“.

So goodbye to an old and dear friend. You’ve had me laughing all the way.

Note: one of the most impressive routines I’ve ever seen or listened to him do was his “I’m a Modern Man” routine at the beginning of his “Life is Worth Losing” HBO special which I was lucky enough to find online. “Modern Man” is the opening bit of the show so you won’t have long to wait once you start watching it. You’ll probably have to listen to it more than once to catch all the cliches.

I banged into Sixty’s site today to see what His Foolishness was up to and low and behold I found out through one of his latest posts that there’s a site for Disabled Boomers called Disaboom kicking around. Well what do you know? I actually qualify as one of these Disaboomers so there’s another typification I can add to my growing list. Seems like the older I get the more labels I attain which is another future post entirely. The ironic thing is that I never gave the term "boomer" any real credit as it might apply to me in fact, I rather ignored the premise that I was ipso facto, a boomer, altogether until this morning when I read Sixty’s post. Now why the term Disaboomer should finally bring my mind to a screeching halt and instead of pursuing more useful undertakings, end up pondering this boomer conundrum the rest of the day is beyond me.

It could be said that I’m experiencing some sort of late blooming middle age crisis or something to that effect but I think not. Nor do I believe it’s a denial of anything relating to the aging process at all since I’ve never considered myself immune to that sort of thing. Actually I think it’s more of a "hmm, guess I haven’t bothered to give it much thought" kind of thing similar to the rather rude wake up call I received when the VA slapped a "70% disabled" sticker on my forehead and sent me on my way. Yes, I think that about sums it up alright. Seems like I’m getting a lot of rude awakenings of late.

Be that as it may, I’ll guess the proper thing to do now is to give that Disaboomer site a good looking over and who knows? I might actually find that other folks my age might possibly feel the way same I do. Stranger things have happened.
