I was perusing the Elections section in Google News this morning when half way down the page I found this:

Vacaville, CA (KCRA) - A California man popped the hood of his truck and saw a pair of eyes looking back at him.

“When I opened it up there were a pair of eyes staring at me and this growl, it blew me away, I didn’t know what to do,” says Witthoeft.

Source: http://www.wltx.com/FYI/story.aspx?storyid=61790

Now what this had to do with the current election I have no idea but I must admit that I enjoyed reading it more than actually reading about the election. I even enjoyed it more when I found out that the pit bull, after getting herself good and stuck, kept herself occupied by eating all the engine parts within her reach resulting in over a $1000.00 worth of damage. I sure would have loved being there when he had to explain this to his insurance company…

“Really! There was a pit bull in under my hood this morning and it ate my engine…really!”

I’ve known some pretty moronic dogs in my time but only a pit bull would be stupid enough to get itself stuck in a truck engine.

Of course he’ll never hear the end of it from his friends and family I’m sure. There will be endless jokes about varmints in his truck’s engine and I’ll bet he’s going to get sick and tired about hearing how is truck is a real dog.

Okay, enough about this…back to the elections. So what do you think–Obama wins the nomination and hauls Hillary on as his running mate?

I lived my first formidable 10 years of my life in upstate New York, my folks living exactly 10 miles south of Lake Ontario and 37.5 miles north of Lake Erie. Now ask me if we got snow. Everything from snow measured in yards (almost) and ice storms that would bring down branches nearly a foot in diameter or sometimes even the whole tree when the winds got up around 70-80 miles an hour. I remember my Grandfather showing us slides he took of some of the bad winter storms he and my grandmother had been through living on the outskirts of Syracuse, NY during the 50’s. Unbelievable.

We may get the severe cold here in Vermont but I can tell you for certain–we don’t get these kind of snows. Can’t say as I’d want to either.

Of course there’s always the effects of global warming to contend with so who knows what the future might bring.

From the days of the old Wordless Workshop to today’s version it’s always been an old favorite of mine. So imagine my surprise when I banged into the Popular Science website to find the whole thing had apparently been out for a major makeover with the end result looking like a highly polished blog–which is exactly what it was.

Drupal was their choice of platform in this case and that’s just fine for more and more of the mainstream website’s are switching over to CMS/blogging platforms either partially or completely which just means that the servers that have been serving up static web pages for over a decade now are finally going to have to be beefed up to run these new dynamic website’s which will hopefully become the norm for all hosting type services. And that’s good for all us blogger’s in general. Personally I appreciate the easy interface and navigation that these types of platforms offer over the old static sites which could very often be confusing to find your way around.

To be honest about it I think Drupal is the right choice for the online version of Popular Science. Like WordPress, Drupal has a style all it’s own no matter what theme you may layer over it and the shiny, modulated look seems to fit the style of the magazine for the most part (although they are calling this first version a beta and more work needs to be done).

So here’s to another mainstream site going to the blogs. More power to ‘em I say.

AOL kills the old and venerable Netscape browser. Discontinues all support by February 1, 2008.

Remember way back when surfing the Internet meant a 14.4 kb modem and just about every website had "Best viewed using Netscape" tacked onto to it somewhere? Well, as of February 1, 2008 that old and venerable browser/Internet suite that’s been around well over 12 years will fade into browser history when AOL finally shuts down all support and development of this old man of the virtual sea.

An historic name in software will effectively pass into history in February as AOL discontinues development and active support for the Netscape browser, according to an official blog.

AOL will keep delivering security patches for the current version of Netscape until Feb. 1, 2008, after which it will no longer provide active support for any version of the software, according to a Friday entry on The Netscape Blog by Tom Drapeau, lead developer for Netscape.com. The Netscape.com Web site will remain as a general-purpose portal.

Source: PCWorld: AOL to End Support for Netscape Browser

I didn’t use Netscape all that much even back then but it always sat on whatever PC I had at the time like some faithful old friend that was just waiting for the chance to do whatever job I asked of it. As soon as Internet Explorer 4 came out, I dropped Netscape altogether. Still, the name "Netscape" has always been synonymous with surfing the WWW almost since the WWW first came into existence. Anyone remember a browser called Mosaic?.

Those who still use this piece of Internet history can take a bit of heart though. Although the browser, which lately has been an open source, Mozilla based affair, is headed into the virtual afterworld, There’s the Netscape theme and Netscape extensions for Firefox developed by the Netscape Add-ons team and the browser will still be able to be downloaded form the Netscape archives. Be aware though as of February 1, 2008, there will no longer be any security update support for the browser and that means increased vulnerability as time goes on.

So goodbye Netscape. The young ones may not understand what this means but us older folks will tip our hats in respect as the browser that was there in the beginning goes wafting by on it’s way to greener pastures.
