So I sit down at the computer, bring up one of my trusty local blog editors with at least 3 posts revolving around my little pea brain ready to write up, categorize, tag, title and publish. I love it when I feel like this cuz’ there’s always a couple of good posts in it. It’s a beautiful day, bright, sunny and in the 80’s–no wind, lightening, or hail to take out the power as it has been of late. So off I go…

…and the power goes out.

Ooookay. So maybe somebody turned on the air conditioner that broke the power company’s back, who knows?

Wait…

…and the power comes back on.

Power up the computer, reboot the wireless router, Internet’s back, did my post get auto saved? Yes, it did–onward.

Banging through the first paragraph now and on to the second–alright, time to scrounge that image off of Google News, got it! Insert into post, align properly and…

…the power goes out. [Insert: Vivid cursing here]

Wait…

So what the hell is this anyway? It’s beautiful, it’s sunny, not even a breeze so what is it this time? Another squirrel blow itself up in the sub-station? Sheeesh!

Power comes back on.

This time I’m waiting. Empty the dish washer, put away dishes, put away freshly washed clothes, walk around house just to say I did, come back in…power still on. Power up computer, reboot wireles router, check for saved post, onward once again…

Second paragraph down and onto the third–made it! A fourth and final closing paragraph, tag and…

…power goes out.

Okay, that’s it! Call power company, get a recording, says that Newport is experiencing a power outage (no sh**), all crews working on it, blah-blah-blah-natter-natter-natter, so why wait on hold just to get a tired, fed up operator who will just tell me the same thing?

Ate dinner, went for a walk with my honey.

And now we’re back. Did the power up, reboot routine again, post was saved as usual, finished it up and publish…success! It’s up! it’s there! Power’s still on! Four hours to publish a four paragraph post but I made it!

Yes!

Now onto the next. Do I even remember what it was supposed to be about? Oh yeah, it was about…

I may not be the world’s biggest Obama fan but the latest news stories about him getting a “discount” on a new home is absolutely ridiculous. Can’t they do any better than this?

Obama Got Discount on Home Loan - washingtonpost.com

The freshman Democratic senator received a discount. He locked in an interest rate of 5.625 percent on the 30-year fixed-rate mortgage, below the average for such loans at the time in Chicago. The loan was unusually large, known in banker lingo as a “super super jumbo.” Obama paid no origination fee or discount points, as some consumers do to reduce their interest rates.

Two pages of this tripe in the article no less with all sorts of “OMG” type statements that mean absolutely nothing at all except this; the guy got a fair deal, that’s all.

The going rate at the time was around 5.94 percent which means his so called “discount” was a mind boggling .315 percent which saved him about $300,000 on a 1.65 million dollar house. They even managed to drag Tony Rezko back into the picture by bringing up the point that his wife had bought the adjacent property for $625,000 then sold a portion of the the underdeveloped property to the Obama’s to increase their yard space–oh, heavens to Betsy, the guy’s obviously on the make.

This is not news.

Hell, I did better than that when I bought my house down on the south shore of CT years ago. I locked in a fixed interest rate better than 2 percent lower than the going rate and a paid significantly less than the asking price along with absolutely no closing costs while I was at it. Sure, my place wasn’t a 1.65 million dollar restored Georgian mansion but then again I didn’t have a 2 million dollar book deal going either. No one actually offered to increase my yard space by selling part of theirs but I already had a good size yard anyway so who needed it? Just more to mow is the way I look at it.

If this is the best the media can do to dig up dirt on Obama then someone’s slacking, he hides it better than any politician in history or maybe there’s just not that much to dig up after all. Either way, this is about as newsworthy as me buying my house in CT was.

Of course it did make me write up a post about it didn’t it?

I read an article today in one of the local newspapers about the 30th anniversary of the Vermont lottery and the possibility of expanding the lottery in various yet unsaid ways. What caught my attention about this article was that among the interviews of local folks about how they felt about this possible expansion of said lottery, one of the respondents declared that Vermont needs to take more responsibility for the people that play who have gambling addictions. Another actually stated that he was thinking of suing the State Lottery Commission because he had spent all his [family's?] money on lottery tickets was now broke, debt ridden and wifeless to boot.

Excuse me? Let’s wait one minute here. Broke, debt ridden and his wife left him? Now whose fault is that I ask you? The only one to blame for this individual being in financial and marital strife is the individual himself, not the State of Vermont.

Sorry buddy but you’ll get no sympathy from me. Shall I sue the Bicycle Playing Cards Company because I was too pigheaded to stop playing poker when I was ahead of the game and ended up losing my butt? It was obviously their fault that I lost my money. And which credit card company should I sue for providing my first wife the means to get way over her head in debt? It’s surely Visa and MasterCard’s responsibility to make sure she used her plastic responsibly, yes? It’s their fault that I ended up having to commit bankruptcy because I was too young and naïve to stop her, right?

Which bar do I take to court for letting me drink past my capacity to drive safely and then purposely ignored the fact I was actually going to ride my Harley Davidson home after closing time? Which of the many bars that I frequented during my younger days can I sue the daylights out of for letting me ride off, completely inebriated, on my 800 lb American made motorcycle to not only endanger my own life but other lives as well?

How much money can I suck out of an “establishment” because of my own stupidity and lack of responsibility?

I smoked for 28 years before I quit and it’s not the tobacco company’s fault or responsibility if one day I’m diagnosed with lung cancer and/or heart disease–It’s entirely my own for smoking cigarettes in the first place.

No Lottery Commission of any State in the Union is responsible for human stupidity and lack of personal responsibility. Have a problem with gambling? Then don’t play, it’s that simple. Yet invariably somebody out there is guaranteed to cry “gambling addiction is real! It’s a sickness! Oh, the poor gambler.” Well you go ahead and believe that if you want; to me it falls under the category of Ultimate Stupid People Tricks.

To the man whining about how the lottery commission is to blame for his current situation, here’s a wake up call. It’s your own fault, buddy! You cocked up your own life; no lottery commission did it for you so stop your whining and get your act together. It’s never too late.

Sound cold and heartless, do I? I don’t think so and no one who knows me would ever accuse me of being heartless. However, I have to admit that I have absolutely no patience or tolerance for this kind of moronic human behavior.

Even in myself.

My fellow blogger and fellow deaf type person, Karen Putz of A Deaf Mom Shares Her World, was turned away from a Steak and Shake drive through window that she’s been served at many times before and for what you might ask? For being deaf and by the general manager himself.

Now I’m not going to go on about my own experiences which have been frustrating enough but if you want a damn good idea of what those of us who are classified "hearing impaired" (what a joke) have to put up with, I suggest you read her initial post; Steak and Shake Denies Service and then read the subsequent entries as her saga continues. ABC even picked this one up. Not all days are this bad of course but every day can be a struggle.

Like me, Karen’s not the type to go around with an "I’M DEAF" chip on her shoulder looking for anywhere she might be able to cause a ruckus, just the opposite in fact. But I’m proud of her for taking a solid stand against this blatant disregard for the ADA and that general manager who refused to stop being such a ****ing idiot.

All the above, what she went through, what we all go through who are similarly disabled–is one of the reasons I’m glad I don’t carry a gun in my rig.

Nuclear weapons raise their ugly heads again:

As an ex-cold war submariner who, along with his fellow “bubbleheads” (on both sides by the way), spent an average of 300 days out of the year poking holes through ocean depths (along with generally ruining their health) doing their absolute best at trying to keep the world from blowing itself up, I find it increasingly disheartening when I read about the other areas today such as North Korea and whoever happens to be pounding on the table over in the middle east territories attempting (or perhaps already succeeding) to develop and test nuclear weapons. Possibly the kind of nuclear weapons that were first developed by the US and the (then) Soviet Union…dirty ones!

Long after our two countries laid down their horrible weapons of mass destruction (and I absolutely refuse to delve into what events may have caused that to happen), these (censored) people want to start it all over again and by what I’ve seen over the past many years, these particular governments absolutely do not have anywhere near the awareness, discipline, objectivity and presence of mind that the two superpowers of the cold war can be credited with. After all, we decided to make a change for the better and it’s worked so far. I understand things don’t always pan out but at least we’re still trying.

In the article, North Korea had this to say:

The North, however, said it will “never use nuclear weapons first and strictly prohibit any threat of nuclear weapons and nuclear transfer,” defending its nuclear weapons as a protection from “the U.S. threat of aggression” and a measure “to safeguard peace and stability on the Korean peninsula.”

I’m sorry, but that’s like saying “trust me” and when it comes to nuclear weapons capability…I didn’t even trust us.

Now with Iran saying that it’s pursuit of nuclear technology is only for the purpose of providing power to it’s people the phrase “you’ve got to be kidding” comes readily to mind. I’m sorry folks, normally I’m a person that’s fairly open-minded with an mostly objective point of view but when it comes to “pursuit of nuclear technology” by these two countries alone, you might understand when I say I tend to have a rather dim view on the whole thing.
In my opinion we’d be very foolish to trust in anything that they said.

Since I’m always trying to see the possible consequences of future actions, the Australian news site, News.com.au has an interesting “what if” article in the Courier Mail section on the current problem of sanctions against Iran for it’s push for nuclear technology. I recommend giving both articles a read over..

I don’t usually like to include this sort of post in the blog however, with my particular type of service background, I needed to let out some of my anxiety. Most people won’t understand where this anxiety comes from but there is some who understand it all too well.

We had a saying during the cold war that if a nuclear war ever did occur, Ground Zero was the best possible place to be.

A nuclear war (anywhere) would be the most devastating war the human race ever unleashed upon itself.

It would also be the shortest.

I’d hate to think that me and all my underwater cohorts had all our time and effort wasted for us.

I agree with Walt Kelly:

We have met the enemy…and he is us. (Pogo)
