Way up north

So here we are back at the top of the Northeast Kingdom waiting for the weather to drop from a balmy 44 degrees to below freezing (probably in all of a half an hour) and the rain coming down to change into a whole lot of snow. Typical for this place. Good thing we got the old snowblower running.

The picture above is the beautiful Lake Memphramagog (during the somewhat warmer weather) by which good old Newport, VT is situated. The lake itself is a fairly narrow, 31 mile long heat pump which channels the wondefully superchilled air down from Canada during the winter and shoves it right into your front door and your fuel bill right through the roof but what can one expect when one has the Canadian border for a next door neighbor I ask ya’? It’s also one heck of a pretty mountain lake that extends right into Canada with the town of Magog on the other end of it. I left a link in the post title that will lead you a bit of info about this far away little city if you’re curious enough. If you want to see some pics of the place, check out this link to Google Images. The stuff that comes up is kinda interesting.

Alright, I’m off to find out all the other ways I can make mistakes on this thing. I’ve got a couple of good ideas on how to screw things up but that’s how you learn right? By making up for your mistakes. Swearing a bit usually helps also.

Tis the evenin’

Well time does fly when you’re just doing what needs to be done (oog).

Just got my annual Soc Sec report in the mail today that tells me just how much I’m not going to be making if I work to 66 and 10 months years of age. Ain’t much I tell ya’ and the way they have it I’ll have to work till I’m 108 and 4 months just to be completely broke. Don’t think I’m going to make it.

As you can see I seem to have a links list in the side bar now and I cheated to do it. Can’t beat that ol’ copy and paste routine. Guess I’ll just have to get up to speed on my html coding. It seems I’ve forgotten everything I used to know which believe me, wasn’t much. I’ll do it though.

Anyway, this site is more of an learning platform for a another blog I’m thinking about posting about the good ‘ole Northeast Kingdom of that great, green hilled wonder land called Vermont where only the stout of heart and those of strong character survive. Any others hike the hillsides, peep at the leaves and do winter sports or whatever just as so they can go back down-country before things get too rough. I just want to make sure I know what I’m doing before I go for bigger and better things.

Alright, I’ve stared at this screen long enough. Tomorrow’s time enough for more adventure.

‘night all…

Morning all

Morning all.

Hope you all slept well (mornin’ honey “smack-smack”)

Unfortunately this sunny, unseasonably warm day is going to turn into a nasty mess before the weekend is over. That’s right folks, the Northeast Kingdom is going to do her thing and slam us from 50 degrees and sunny to cold and snowy she’ll do it in the time it takes you to turn around. Ah well, it is the season and all that.

Speaking of the weekend it’s going to take until then I get a handle on the workings of this business and I’m sure the page is going to look fairly amusing from time to time. I believe in messin’ around with things in order to find out how things work so I’m sure the site going to reflect that mess for awhile.

In the meantime,

Have an ordinary day?.

A word from anonymous

Please note: I’ve had to switch over from my original “Conversation Lost” blog to this one and have lost the comment refered to below. My thanks again to “Anonymous” for the link and the question.

I seem to have attracted a friend by the name of Anonymous concerning my recent posts on energy. Alright, so it could be anyone but this particular anonymous came up with a couple of good comments; a question for my entry “If old man winter had teeth” which addressed my statement that “Vermont, like other states with a similar type landscape have some of the highest electric rates in the union” and an excellent resource link concerning solar power (Alternative energy, Jan, 23rd). If someone wants to know about solar power anywhere in the country this is the link to go to:

http://www.solarelectricpower.org

And on “If old man winter had teeth” the question was: ” Doesn’t the news keep telling Vermonters that they have some of the LOWEST electric rates in the area?”

Good question.

Of course it is or he/she wouldn’t have asked it.

Answer: Right and wrong. If you look at the State by State electric rate table for September, 2005 (updated Dec 21st, 2005) at the Official Nebraska Government website: http://www.neo.ne.gov/statshtml/115.htm, Vermont does have the lowest rate in the New England area with the exception of Maine so anonymous was essentially correct however, Vermont is still in the top ten in the nation for the states with the highest electric rates at 10.98 cents per killowatthour which is 2.36 cents above the national average which places Vermont at a solid #10. That is if you read the list from the bottom up the bottom being the highest.

The news, as usual only tells you what it wants you to hear. It was the right question though. I wondered about the same thing myself.

Check out those links, you might find them interesting.

What ya’ ain’t got…

One of the things about living up in the Northeast kingdom, among other things like the six solid months of hard winter, is learning to do without. We don’t have convenience stores around every corner for instance and you usually have to set aside a whole day if you want to go shopping at a major super market or big box store since those are pretty scarce around here. Basically the only thing you can “run out to” is the local general/convenience store ’cause there’s usually one within 20 miles or so.

The other thing you don’t readily get up here is things like wide spread cable so satellite is the only way to go and getting a local broadcast station like channel 3 out of Burlington with an antennae is right out since the hills tend to get in the way so satellite has to do that too if you can actually convince the boneheads that “NO…I CANNOT receive local channels, I don’t care what your @###@@!!! computer says!!!”. With that comes the interesting fact that no matter how far up in the hills you may wander you’ll most likely come across someone or twos or threes or whatever the case may be, living in some double wide or prefab and 9 times out of 10 there’ll be a satellite dish on top of it. Or maybe two or three.

Another thing you might be surprised to find up here are a growing number of home computers. Vermonters tend to be information hogs. It pays to be informed ya’ know so you might not only find a computer sitting on a well organized desk in the 200 year old farmhouse but you’ll probably find it online also which leads to another “do without”.

You might find it interesting to know that dial-up internet was a new thing up here just a few years ago and DSL was nonexistent. Vermont’s phone system has always been a bit behind the times. I mean, we just got a working, complete 911 system about 6 years ago and there still ain’t no such thing as 411 at all. Sure, dial up was “available” back then but a long distance call for most folks, lousy throughput and always subject to weather. Now-a-days you usually have dial up available where you live that’s still subject to local phone charges which are usually billed at a a higher per minute rate than long distance, has lousy throughput and weather still knocks it out.

Verizon just offered DSL to the folks that live in Newport proper at a more than reasonable rate which really pissed off the competition to no end which is why I even have this blog in the first place so I’m playing around with possibilities so things might get a little strange at times.

Anyway, the ice they promised is here and still coming down so I guess we’re trapped in the house which really isn’t such a bad place to be trapped at all.

See ya’,
