Looks like Firefox 3 beta 4 will be released soon since as of this morning, the update to the nightly builds (trunk) has now gone to "Minefield/3.0b5pre". Drag and drop in Firefox 3’s "Places" Library (the old "Organize Bookmarks") now works properly at last or at least in today’s nightly build it does.
